To be more precise, this jog is mostly around my neighborhood in Ottawa. It is the distance by air to Vancouver that my friend Louise and I are doing. If we make it, Louise and I will get on a plane to Vancouver and compete in one of the BMO Vancouver Marathon weekend races. We may not win medals, but for sure we’ll have cake for my seventy-fifth birthday at the finish line. The workout for big birthdays represents a big change for me. I used to hate birthdays, especially those milestone ones. No longer feeling young is horrible. As I approached my sixtieth birthday, Louise suggested setting targets to mark milestone birthdays. “That way you are looking forward to something, not dreading (非常害怕) it,” she pointed out. By doing those expanding my world or demanding new skills, I feel myself growing, not shrinking. For my sixtieth birthday, I got it into my head that I should do an Olympic distance triathlon (铁人三项赛), which turned out to be a real milestone. After over four hours on the course, I was last among the 95 competitors. But I was the oldest woman competing, so that made me first in my age category. Since then, I’ve looked on the special days as a call for trying something different. For my sixty-fifth birthday, I went to run a half marathon. And I finished seven activities that took me out of my “comfort zone” at seventy. I’m fortunate to have celebrated so many birthdays in good health and spirits, so whether I succeed in running to Vancouver or not, I’m grateful for the opportunity. One thing I’ve learned from taking up these challenges is that there are many possibilities for new adventures and achievements, even as we grow older. So do spend every day of every year with a definite end in view, which will release your energy and make you happy. 4. How does the author plan to observe her 75th birthday?A. Going jogging in Ottawa. B. Flying to Vancouver with a friend. C. Joining in a marathon race. D. Running 3,550 km around her neighborhood. 5. What’s the author’s original attitude toward birthdays?A. Calm. B. Fearful. C. Positive. D. Casual. 6. Why does the author think of the triathlon as a milestone?A. It made her feel much younger. B. It changed her attitude to birthdays. C. It proved she was in good condition. D. It made her like her comfort zone better. 7. What does the author suggest at the end of the text?A. Living with a clear goal. B. Looking for new challenges. C. Keeping energetic by being close to nature. D. Celebrating birthdays by running marathons. CYou are walking down a busy street on your way to work. You pass a street performer playing a song you haven’t heard for years. Suddenly, you’re mentally reliving the first time you heard the song. The music takes you right back to where you were, who you were with and the feelings associated with that memory. This experience is known as a music-evoked autobiographical (自传性的) memory. It’s a common experience and it just comes to mind spontaneously. Amazing, isn’t it?Research has recently begun to explore the connections between music and evoking memories. First, music tends to accompany many distinctive life events, such as celebrations, graduations, weddings and funerals, so it can play an important role in reconnecting us with these self-defining moments. Music also often arrests our attention, due to the way it affects our minds, bodies and emotions. When music draws our attention, this increases the likelihood that it will be encoded (给……编码) in memory together with details of a life event. And this then means it is able to serve as an effective reminder of this event years later. Another recent study found that more familiar music evokes more memories and brings memories to mind more unconsciously. And the reason is that we typically reengage with songs more often over our lifetime compared to films, books or TV shows. Indeed, the power of music to connect us with our past shows how music, memories and emotions are all linked — and it seems certain songs can act as a direct line to our younger selves. “It seems then that music appears to have the ability to reconnect us with more emotionally positive moments from our past. This suggests that using music therapeutically (在治疗上) may be particularly fruitful. That will be great news for some patients,” says Kelly Jakubowski, assistant professor in music psychology, Durham University. 8. What does the underlined word “spontaneously” probably mean?A. Naturally. B. Consciously. C. Slowly. D. Temporarily. 9. What is the second paragraph mainly about?A. What music can do with one’s well-being. B. The process of music arousing memories. C. The links between musicals and memories. D. Why music can bring back memories. 10. What does Kelly Jakubowski imply?A. Music can strengthen people’s memories. B. Music is only linked to a certain occasion. C. Music functions better than anything else. D. Music can be used for medical treatment. 11. What is the text?A. An online survey. B. A science report. C. A book review. D. A diary entry. DRivers are the veins (静脉) of the Earth, transporting the water and nutrients needed to support the planet’s ecosystems, including human life. While many nutrients are essential to the survival of life, there is one element transported by water in rivers that holds the key to life and to the future of our planet — carbon. Carbon is everywhere and understanding the way it moves and is either released or stored by the Earth system is a complex science in itself. Carbon starts its journey downstream when natural acid rain, which contains carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, melts minerals in rocks. This helps transform carbon dioxide to bicarbonate (碳酸氢盐) in the water that then flows in our rivers. This is a very long process, which is one of the main ways carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere. Carbon is transported by rivers to oceans and once that carbon reaches the ocean, it is stored naturally in deep sea sediments (沉淀物) for millions of years. As carbon travels down a river, different processes may impact whether it continues to flow downstream or whether it is released into the atmosphere. For example, human engineering, like extensive dam construction, will result in dramatic changes to how water and sediments travel down the river. Some carbon that fails to reach the sea may return to the atmosphere in some way, which causes more warming. Earth’s climate is closely related to the carbon cycle. We all know about the essential role of plants in consuming carbon dioxide, but do we know enough about rivers? Changing the chemistry and the course of rivers may have significant impacts on how they transport carbon. Remember: wherever we live, we all live downstream. 12. Where is the carbon in rivers originally from?A. The atmosphere. B. The rocks. C. The acid rain. D. The upstream areas. 13. Why is human engineering mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. To show how important carbon is to life. B. To explain how necessary it is to build dams. C. To show how a natural process is interrupted. D. To explain how humans fight global warming. 14. What does the author want to convey in the last paragraph?A. We’d better move upstream to live. B. We should protect plants along rivers. C. We’d better seek more help from plants. D. We should be cautious about river management. 15. What is the best title for the text?A. What Humans Do with RiversB. How Rivers’ Transporting Carbon CountsC. What the Carbon Cycle Means to UsD. How Living Downstream Affects the Earth第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Four Qualities That Make You Attractive to OthersThere is something many people gets wrong about attraction. 16 The reality is that attraction usually has more to do with personality or characteristics than appearance. C【解析】推理判断题。根据文章第三段中的“For example, human engineering, like extensive dam construction, will result in dramatic changes to how water and sediments travel down the river”可知,提到人类工程是为了说明前一句内容“不同的过程可能会影响它是否继续向下游流动或是否释放到大气中”,即人类对河流运输碳这一自然过程的干预。故选C。14. 16.
