A CV is a sales document; it conveys the information of what you are looking
for and why. Why you are qualified for such work, covering your previous work
experience, education, qualification and interests, so effort should be made to
make CV as clear as possible in order to sell you most effectively for the post
which you are applying for.
Profile
The profile should be a short sentence stating clearly:
What work you are looking for
What you have to offer (Why you are qualified)
I believe in starting the CV with a profile. This explains to the employer what
you are looking for and summarizes all of the attributes ( 特质) that can be found
in detail on the rest of your CV.
The employer knows what they are looking for. If your profile states this in
summary, then you are making their job a lot easier and they are more likely to
put you in the “yes pile, as they quickly check a large volume of CVs.
Work Experience
Work experience should come directly after the profile in reverse
chronological (反向时间 顺序) order. The first thing an employer will look at is
the last job you have had and if you had the relevant experience or achieved
something relevant to the job you are applying for in previous roles.
Education
Education should be also in reverse chronological order.
Other Qualifications
If you have attended any training courses or have industrial qualifications
they should be entered here. Remember this is a sales document list everything
you have done here — sell yourself!
Interests
Qualify you hobbies and interests. Do not mention a thing like I like to go
running without qualifying it as to what has been achieved. For example, it
would be better to say “I am part of the Harriers running club.” or “I recently
completed the Great North Run.

Giant pandas (大熊猫) are no longer endangered, Chinese officials have said,
decades of work to save the creatures helped drive their population in the wild up
to 1,800. The species will be listed as vulnerable (易 危 物 种 ), Cui Shuhong,
director of the Department of Natural Ecological Protection of the Ministry of
Ecology and Environment, said at a press conference on Wednesday.
China has spent half a century attempting to boost the population of its
famous animals, creating panda reserves across several mountain ranges in an
effort to save them from extinction. They were taken off the endangered list by
the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in 2016.
Since the 1970s, Chinese officials have worked on a campaign to drive up
their numbers. To prevent habitat loss, officials created specially designed nature
reserves in areas where their main food source, bamboo, is plentiful. In 2017,
China announced plans for a 10,476-square-mile reserve, which is three times the
size of Yellowstone National Park.
China has established a relatively complete nature reserves system, Cui
said on Wednesday as he announced the move. Large areas of natural
ecosystems have been systematically and completely protected, and wildlife
habitats have been effectively improved.
Pandas are known in China as an umbrella species, which means experts
believe measures to protect them would help protect other species, as well as the
larger ecosystem. Cui added that the populations of some other rare and
endangered species are gradually recovering as well. The number of species such
as Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, and Asian elephants has increased
significantly. he said.
7.What has happened to giant pandas?
A.They will never be protected in future.
B.Their nature reserves will decrease sharply.
C.They are not listed as endangered species.
D.They have to face the worsening situations.
8.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 2?
A.Increase. B.Maintain.
C.Cancel. D.Copy.
9.What can we know about an umbrella species?
A.They can improve the production of umbrellas.
B.Protecting it is beneficial to a larger ecosystem.
C.They are not at the top of food chain in nature.
D.Protecting it means endangering other species.
10.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A novel. B.A business plan.
C.A guidebook. D.A newspaper.
Say “Sit” to your dog, and he’ll likely sit on the floor. But would he respond
correctly if the word were spoken by a stranger, or someone with a thick accent?
A new study shows he will, suggesting dogs understand spoken words in a clever
and complicated way long thought unique to humans.
Holly Root-Gutteridge, a biologist, and her colleagues ran a test. The
researchers filmed 42 dogs of different breeds as they sat with their owners near
an audio speaker that played noncommand words with similar sounds, such as
“had”, “hid”, and “who’d”. The words were spoken-not by the dog’s owner-but
by several strangers, men and women of different ages and with different accents.
In the video above, the dog Max turns quickly and listens seriously when he
hears a woman say “had” for the first time. But as other women with different
accents repeat the word, he loses interest, indicating he knows they are all saying
the same word. When a speaker says a new word, like “who’d”, Max cheers up
again, but his attention flags when a new voice returns to saying “had”. Together,
these reactions suggest dogs recognize words regardless of the speaker-and that
they don’t need any training to do it, the team reports today in Biology Letters.
“It’s wonderful—and novel—to see research looking at dogs’ reactions to
words that are not commands or requests,” says Alexandra Horowitz, a researcher
at Barnard College in New York City. Because of the nature of the test, however,
the scientists cannot show that the dogs “understood” what the words meant,
Horowitz points out. “But the work clearly demonstrates that dogs are listening to
us,” she says, even when our speech is not about them.
11.What can we learn from this study?
A.Dogs can hear some simple words. B.Dogs can hear words like humans.
C.Dogs cannot understand a stranger. D.Dogs know their owners’
meaning.
12.What do the researchers do for the dogs in the study?
A.Record their sounds. B.Record their reactions.
C.Train their hearing ability. D.Train their learning ability.
13.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The result of the study. B.A dog filmed in the study.
C.An example of the research. D.Different reactions of the dogs.
14.What is Horowitz’s attitude towards the study?
A.Objective. B.Favorable.
C.Opposed. D.Unclear.

How Sociologists Define Culture
Culture is one of the most important concepts within sociology because
sociologists recognize that it plays a crucial role in our social lives. It is important
for shaping social relationships, maintaining and challenging social order,
determining how we make sense of the world and our place in it, and in shaping
our everyday actions and experiences in society. 15
In brief, sociologists define the non–material aspects of culture as the values
and beliefs, language, communication and practices that are shared in common by
a group of people. Expanding on these categories, culture is made up of our
knowledge, common sense, assumptions and expectations. It is also the rules,
norms, laws and morals that govern society; the words we use as well as how we
speak and write them; and the symbols we use to express meaning, ideas and
concepts. 16 It informs and is encapsulated in how we walk, sit, carry our
bodies and interact with others; how we behave depending on the place, time and
“audience”; and how we express identities of race, class and gender, among
others. Culture includes the collective practices we participate in as well, such as
religious ceremonies, the celebration of secular holidays and attending sporting
events.
17 This aspect of culture includes a wide variety of things, from
buildings, technological gadgets and clothing, to film, music, literature and art,
among others. Aspects of material culture are more commonly referred to as
cultural products.
Sociologists see the two sides of culture—the material and non–material—as
closely connected. Material culture emerges from and is shaped by the non-
material aspects of culture. 18 But it is not a one–way relationship between
material and non–material culture. Material culture can also influence the non-
material aspects of culture. For example, a powerful documentary film might
change people’s attitudes and beliefs. 19 What has come before in terms of
music, film, television and art, for example, influences the values, beliefs and
expectations of those who interact with them, which then, in turn, influence the
creation of additional cultural products.
A.This is why cultural products tend to follow patterns.
B.It is composed of both non-material and material things.
C.Without culture, we would not have relationships or society.
D.Culture is also what we do and how we behave and perform.
E.Material culture is composed of the things that humans make and use.
F.Culture is distinct from social structure and economic aspects of society.
G.In other words, what we value, believe and know influences the things
that we make.
