For years, communities around Kenya's Tsavo National Park have been troubled by elephants

straying(走失) into their farms and homes. Residents are caught unawares whenever the huge creatures

turn up in their villages, hurting people and destroying things.

Four Kenyan teens, Sandra Lukindo, Joyce Moto, Nancy Wairimu and Macrin a Antonia, came up

with a solar-powered sensor kit to alert(使 戒 备 ) the authorities to stray elephants.These four

youngsters won the Startup Africa Competition and are now taking the global scene by storm.

The device is an integration of motion sensors and the Global System for Mobile communication

with the ability to send strong signals and raise alarms once an elephant is on the way to a village.“It

has a red light, which indicates that power is on. A sensor set to track an elephant passing about 180m

away raises a siren (警报器), which alert s both the community and KenyaWildlife Service(KWS)

officials through a short message service,”Wairimu said.

“This device will take care of both the elephants and the community. The number of elephants

being killed secretly keeps increasing,”Antonia said. She cited research showing thatKWS struggles to

deal with illegal hunters in the vast park.

George Nagwala, KWS assistant director, said the creation is an effective way of solving the

human-wildlife conflict, “We are happy because the community is getting a unique way of dealing with

this problem, even as our officers work around the clock to safeguard wildlife and the com-

munity,”Nagwala said. The wildlife service is currently using radio collars to map out the elephants'

migratory routes and identify how far they travel in search of water and vegetation.

28. What has been a long-term headache for residents near Tsavo National Park?

A. Their villages being crowded with visitors.

B. Their houses being destroyed by storms often.

D. Their farmland being taken up to make room for the park.

29. Why does Wairimu say the words in Paragraph 3?

A. To discuss the wide application of their device.

B. To explain what inspired their invention.

C. To demonstrate how their device works.

D. To introduce the elephants they have spotted.

30. How might the device benefit KWS according to Antonia?

A. It can help fight illegal elephant hunting.

B. It can replace the old-fashioned radio collars.

C. It can map out the elephants' migratory routes.

D. It can offer a cheap way of driving elephants away.

31. What is Nagwala's attitude to the device?

A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Neutral.

A confident smile is a happy smile. Have you ever had a stranger smile at you while you were out

in public? Maybe you were feeling down, but their genuine and friendly smiles literally made you turn

your frow n upside down. All thanks to that smiley person, your negative attitude suddenly subsided.

It is hard to believe that such a small gesture can impact your mood so sim ply, but I would be lying if

I said that I've never experienced this feeling. I'm sure you can relate.

With that being said, science can back this up. Where are these happy feelings coming from?Well,

when you smile at someone, you may feel like you're experiencing temporary happiness. That is because

endorphins(内啡肽) are released in the brain when you smile. Endorphins can be described as natural

painkillers for the body, which also boost your self-esteem(自尊). Smiling is really a simple act of

kindness, which can also make you feel better about yourself.

As an illustration, someone going in for a job interview with their heads held high, and smiles on

their faces will have a better chance of scoring the job. Employers remark that a person who looks

down when they speak to avoid showing their smiles during an interview, most likely won't be hired,

because it looks as though they are hiding something. However, that personwith an inviting smile shows

confidence. No matter what you look like, a smile is worth a thousand words and people can recognize

that.

It gives me such a rewarding feeling helping children, teens, and adults to build their selfesteem

through treatment. It's all worth it seeing that spark of joy in my patient after the job is all said and

done. I truly believe that a bright eyed smile has the capacity to allow you to connect with others,

without uttering a sound.

32. What does the underlined word“subsided”mean in Paragraph 1?

A. Appeared. B. Weakened. C. Increased. D. Smiled.

33. What's the use of endorphins?

A. Making people feel happy.

B. Making people act kindly.

C. Making brains work fast.

D. Curing some diseases.

34. Why is it hard for a person not showing a smile to get a job?

A. He holds his head too high.

B. He looks down upon others.

C. He looks a little dishonest.

D. He is too confident.

35. What kind of work is the author likely to do?

A. A teacher. B. A volunteer. C. A scientist. D. A doctor.

第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选

项。

How to Teach Confidence

While it might seem like some people are just born confident, confidence is largely an acquired

skill. 36 Start by building up their self esteem, independent thought, and positive self-talk. Show

them how to achieve goals, and how to deal with failure when it happens. With lessons like these, you

can teach the people around you to become more confident.

Model confident behavior for people.

If you're trying to improve someone's confidence, be a model for how they should behave in a

confident way. 37 Show them confident interpersonal relations like eye contact, hand shakes, and

making small talk. This lets them practice in a safe environment.

Praise small accomplishments to raise a person's self-worth.

If you're trying to build someone's confidence, start small. Each accomplishment they complet e is

a cause for celebration, even if it seems small. Be happy for your friends, kids, or students. 38

Give specific praise so people know what they did well.

A specific praise is better than a simple“You did well”. 39 This makes your praise more genuine

and boosts the person's self-esteem more by showing them their strengths.

Start with a positive statement before correcting something.

40 This is especially important if you're a parent, teacher, or coach. If you do have to make

criticisms or corrections, always start by saying something positive first. This raises the person's spirits

and makes it easier for them to take the critical feedback that's coming up.

A. Tell the person exactly what they did well.

B. It's something you can model and teach other people.

C. You may have to point out where someone needs to improve.

D. Instead of feeling criticized, the person will know you're sincere.

E. Act confident around them and in your interpersonal interactions.

F. Your positive energy will teach them to celebrate their achievements.

G. You might show someone's strengths to help them see the bright side.

It was Sally's birthday, and Mother had made her a cake with even candles on it.

Mother, Sally, and Nan went to the beach for a picnic and took the birthday cake with them.

The two girls took off their shoes and stockings and waded in the water. They dug caves and built

castles in the sand.

Soon Mother was ready to cook dinner. So Nan and Sally ran up and down the beach, picking up

dry sticks. Then they piled the sticks together to make a fire, and Nan called Mother to light them.

“Nan,” said Mother, “these sticks will not burn. They are so close together that no air can get

between them. You must spread them out. Fire needs air to burn. Let me show you some-thing.”

Mother took a candle from Sally's cake and lit it. Then she set it up in the sand.

“Now,” said Mother, “get me the glass jar we brought for water.”

She put the jar over the candle, and the candle flame changed slowly from yellow to blue. Then it

went out.

“No air can get through the glass jar,” said Mother. “After the fire burned all the air inside the jar,

it couldn't get any more air, and the flame went out.”

Nan made another pile of sticks. This time she spread the sticks so that plenty of air could get

between them. When the fire was lit, it burned quickly.

“We can put this fire out if we pour sand on it,” said Mother. “The sand will keep air from the

fire.”

“May I try it now?”asked Nan.

“Yes,” said her mother. “But be careful!”

Nan poured sand on a burning stick, and the flames went out.

“Before we leave, we will put out our fire by pouring sand on it,” said Mother.

After dinner Mother walked down the beach to hunt for shells. Sally and Nan stayed by the fire,

Sally went near the fire to throw on more wood. Suddenly her dress caught fire. She began to

第四部分 写作

第一节

One possible version:

Dear David,

How are you getting along? I am writing to invite you to participate in the

upcoming handicraftmaking contest in our school.

The con test is aimed at enriching students' afterclass activities, arousing

individual creative awareness and developing their hand-on abilities. Since you are

interested in designing and making small crafts in your spare time, it is a good

opportunity to show your talent. Remember to submit your artwork to theStudents’

Union before September 20th and there will be an exhibition for award-winning works

in October.

If you need more information, log on to the school website.

Yours,

Li Hua

第二节

One possible version:

Nan was frightened, too, but she did not scream. She remembered that sand

would put out fire. Nan pushed Sally down on the beach and piled sand on her burning

dress. Sally wanted to run toMother, but Nan said, “No, no, Sally! If you run,the

fire will burn faster.”She piled on more and more sand until her sister was almost

covered.

Mother heard Sally scream and came running back. When she got there, Nan had put

out the fire inSally's dress. Though Sally was not hurt at all, she cried because

the fire had burned a big hole in her new dress. Mother kissed her and said, “Don't

cry about the dress, dear. I'll make you a new one. I'm glad my girls are safe. Now

put on your shoes and stockings, and we will cover the fire with sand. But be

careful to keep your dresses away from the flames.” Then they put out the fire

with sand and left the beach.
