Last week, four speakers shared,at the Skoll World Forum, why they find themselves
smiling in spite of everything.
Ava Duvernay
I don't believe that all of the problems are happening to us.I believe they're happening for
us.Lonnie Holley is a wonderful artist who uses waste material to create artworks. He says we
shouldn't think of it as garbage.Rather,it can be turned into something new.
Mahali Hlasa
I love my family.I was brought up in a very close family.Of course we fight, but we also
laugh together. We share all the joys and the pains and find comfort in that. When I want to be
happy, my family is always there for me.With these people who I love,I know that I am safe.
Rodrigo Paris Rojas
I find optimism in villages and slums(贫 民 窟 ).That's because despite the difficult
environment around them, they still come together and celebrate at different times of year.
They bring so many smiles and so much joy. When I see that,I say,I have more money and
more education than them, but they're way happier than me.So I find optimism in those ways
of celebrating life and building community.
Edgard Gouveia Jr.
I've found optimism among kids—Black,white,poor,rich.They play.They enjoy life.They
connect. It's only later that they learn about differences and start to behave differently. But
when I see how they interact as children,it's all about playfulness.Even during war times or in
very poor neighborhoods,I see kids finding ways to create joy among themselves.
21.What is Lonnie Holley?
A.An artist.
B.A consultant.
C.A teacher.
D.A waste collector.
22.What did Mahali Hlasa stress in the speech at the Skoll World Forum?

Moments ago,a seal was resting on a piece of floating ice deep in an Antarctic channel.
Then three hungry killer whales appeared. When the seal noticed them,it was already
surrounded. On this sheet of sea ice,the nearly thousand-pound seal would be unreachable for
most of his enemies in nature. But these killer whales had mastered a hunting technique called
wave washing:working together to turn water into a weapon.
Having identified their target, the killer whales formed a battle line and started rushing
toward the ice.Just before reaching it,they rolled to their sides in a single, synchronized(同步
的) motion. The wave they created was so powerful that it flooded the ice sheet and washed
the frightened seal close to the edge of the ice sheet.Slowly and methodically, they repeated
the attack. At the third time, the wave sent the helpless seal flying into the sea.It struggled to
climb onto a piece of ice,but then disappeared from view..
“The level of intelligence that went into making each wave was staggering. They solved
the problem with very complex teamwork. They used water as a tool,”said wildlife filmmaker
Bertie Gregory, who had spent a decade tracking those killer whales, known as Bls.“I rarely
saw failed hunts. This behavior was not what they were born with.It was learned and mastered
over decades.Every time they made waves,it almost felt like more of a teaching experience
than hunting. It was terrifying to watch.”
But as Antarctica warms and sea ice disappears, seals are increasingly staying on land, out
of killer whales’ reach.
“I've found Bls are losing about 5 percent of their population every year.Whether this
subgroup will go extinct or just adapt their behavior,I don't know, said Gregory. But with
fewer opportunities for the killer whales to wave wash,I'm seeing an extinction of a culture.”
24.How did the killer whales get the seal on the ice sheet?
A.By making huge waves.
B.By jumping onto the ice sheet.
C.By destroying the ice sheet.
D.By waiting underwater patiently.
25.Which of the following best explains“staggering”underlined in paragraph 4?
A.Puzzling.
B.Shocking.
C.Satisfying
D.Annoying
26.What is Bertie Gregory most worried about?
A.The seals and killer whales.
B.The rising sea level.
C.The loss of a hunting skill.
D.The disappeared ice sheet.
27.What can be inferred about the wave washing behavior?
A.It is a natural behavior with whales.
B.Usually, the smartest whales can learn it.
C.It can be carried out by one whale alone.
D.Perhaps,it is only mastered by certain groups.

In China, tea has become an important part of everyday life for thousands of years. As the
tea-processing methods and tea culture have evolved over the years, tea sets have alsochanged
to meet the practical and cultural needs.
During the Tang Dynasty(618-907AD),tea leaves were traded across the country and
Asia. For the convenience of transportation and storage, tea leaves were pressed into bricks. To
prepare tea, drinkers had to cut them into small pieces and boil them in heat-resistant teapots.
By the Song Dynasty(960-1279),drinkers started to turn the hard bricks into powders(粉
末 ) that could be whipped(搅 打 )in a cup with boiled water. This whipped tea is most
commonly associated with Japanese tea ceremonies today.
By the 1500s,tea bricks gave way to the form of rolled leaves. This innovation led to the
invention and use of teapots as we know them today. These teapots originally came from the
Yi Xing region of China and were soon copied throughout the world. Then Japanese teapot-
makers moved the handle from the side to the top of the teapots.
Tea finally reached Europe in the 1600s,along with the necessary tea sets made in Japan
and China. As English teapot-makers began to adapt the tea sets to their country men's tastes,
they eventually added a handle to the tea bowl because of the English habit of drinkinghot
black tea, which was consumed at higher temperatures. The size of teacups also grew to
accommodate milk and sugar in their tea.
By the early 1900s,innovations in tea drinking became an American affair. The most
revolutionary one was the tea bag, which was accidentally commercialized by Thomas
Sullivan. He had been sending customers tea wrapped in silk bags.Rather than take the leaves
out of the bags, as Sullivan intended, the customers put the bags into their teapots instead. Not
only did the teabags push the teapot back to the sidelines of tea service, they were also too
large for teacups and led to the modern practice of drinking tea from mugs.
28.Which were used to make the whipped tea in Japan?
A.Rolled tea leaves.
B.Freshly picked tea leaves.
C.Powdered tea leaves.
D.Loosely pressed tea leaves.
29.Which innovations were first introduced by the British?
A.Tea bags and mugs.B.Tea bowls with handles.
C.Heat-resistant teapots.D.Teapots with top handles
30.What can we learn from Thomas Sullivan's story?
A.Customers are very creative.
B.Innovations are relatively easy.
C.Marketing strategy is critical.
D.Good ideas can be born by accident.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Development of Tea Sets.
B.Varieties of Tea Leaves.
C.Various Tea-Making Methods.
D.The Spread of Tea Trades

In recent years,it seems that we are slowly coming to understand that animals like
elephants, monkeys and pigs have not just brains, but complicated inner and social lives thanks
to scientific advances in our understanding of animal minds.Yet that awareness hasn't made
itself felt to a much greater degree in our closest relationship with animals:at the dinner table.
With Personalities on the Plate,Barbara King asks us to think hard about our meat eating
and how we might reduce it.King does not criticize.Instead, she takes us chapter by chapter on
a cook's tour of animals we humans eat, from insects to pigs and dogs, while exploring the
latest scientific discoveries about their intelligence and feelings that we humans often
wrongly claim uniquely for ourselves.
Built on a mix of firsthand experience and close engagement with the work of scientists,
farmers and chefs,Personalities on the Plate has successfully built a case for them as beings
that deserve more than a trip down our stomachs. With humor and tales of animals acting as
individuals expressing their emotions,Personalities on the Plate takes us on an unforgettable
journey through the world of animals we eat.
“This thoughtful book is not about whether we‘should 'or‘shouldn't' eat meat.Barbara
King looks at the range of values and consequences surrounding farming and feasting, and at
who we are considering eating,”says Carl Safina, author of Beyond Words:What Animals
Think and Feel.“Her book gives me a richer understanding. Her method and passion are
effective. I ended the book agreeing that I can-and should-help these creatures and our
environment by choosing to eat fewer of them or none at all.”
32.What does the author suggest in the first paragraph?
A.Lots of people plan to stop eating meat.
B.Meat consumption should be increased.
C.Scientists should do more to protect animals.
D.Our diet is hardly influenced by our knowledge.
33.What can we know about Personalities on the Plate?
A.It openly opposes meat eating.
B.It is written by scientists and chefs.
C.It includes humorous and vivid stories.
D.It denies animals' intelligence and feelings.
34.What does Carl Safina say about King's book?
A.Its method is too subjective.
B.Its conclusion is convincing.
C.The book is tightly organized.
D.The evidences are contradictory.
35.What is the author's main purpose in writing the text?
A.To review a book.
B.To recommend an author.
C.To promote a diet.
D.To advocate animals' rights.

I had ordered many gifts online for the upcoming Christmas. One day, when the doorbell
rang, I was sure some of the packages arrived.I opened the door, but only to find a beautiful
little dog sitting on the floor. It looked up at me with her big, cute eyes.I looked around, but
there was no one in sight. It was obvious that someone had found the puppy somewhere and
intentionally left her outside the door.
The lovely dog was a timely Christmas gift for me,indeed. The year marked a turning
point in my life.In September,my husband was offered a new job in Africa.Feeling that I had
hit a career bottleneck as a photographer journalist,I decided to relocate with him. While my
husband was busy with his work,I didn't know what to do anyway.I felt isolated, homesick and
lacking purpose. We lived in a house near a river that cut across an expansive grassland. With
few people around,I would take my camera and wander around, photographing aimlessly
every day.
So we adopted the abandoned dog.My husband called her“our little angel”and I named it
accordingly. Angel seemed to be very happy with us and she turned out to be a perfect
companion for me.Always by my side, she enjoyed exploring the shady bushes and mysterious
tunnels all over the grassland.Encouraged by her curiosity,I decided to explore, too.
There was a deep cave near our house and I had been eager to explore it.The only way in
was narrow and slippery.I had promised my husband that I wouldn't do it unless he was
around. But he was always busy. With Angel as my companion,I figured that it was time to
stretch the rule a little bit.
One day,I equipped myself with a good flashlight and carefully walked down the dark
cave. Suddenly,Angel, who had been following me closely, rushed ahead and disappeared into
the darkness.
