A 13-year-old California boy has set out for Nepal to realize his dream of becoming the youngest

person to climb Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain. Jordan Romero aims to reach the

summits(顶峰) of the highest peaks on all seven continents. The idea came to the teenager in 2005

when he was 9 and saw a school poster of the seven summits.

I just want to show kids can also challenge themselves by doing something impossible, and

more importantly the experience will shape me into a stronger man without worrying about the

unknown future, Romero said in a post on a website named after him.

Romero, a native of Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County, stopped to visit friends near Los

Angeles on Monday before boarding a flight bound for Hong Kong. He and his team members are

expected to arrive in Asia on Tuesday. They will continue toward Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal,

and from there set off for the Nepalese-Chinese border where the Himalayas are located.

Mainly with the assistance and support of his parents, Romero already has climbed five of the

mountains on his list, including Alaska's Mount McKinley. Besides, with the aid of his team members

who had worked out a detailed plan, he became the youngest climber of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's

highest peak at 5, 895 meters, at the age of 10.

After climbing Everest, which kills considerable climbers almost every year, Romero is to head

to Antarctica this winter in an attempt to conquer Mount Vinson and complete his seven-summit

project by the end of the year. But, his friends are all thinking that there is no need for him to do

something irrelevant to school work.

Guides who have experience with Everest say Romero probably will be safe, as long as his team

pay close attention to how his body is reacting to low-oxygen conditions near the peak. The current

record holder for the youngest to climb Everest is Temba Tsheri of Nepal who was 16 and lost five

fingers during his 2001 ascent(登高) due to frostbite(冻伤).

24. What is the main purpose of Romero's challenge of climbing?

A. To turn himself into a tougher man.

B. To observe the views on the summits.

C. To inspire kids to challenge themselves.

D. To make his childhood dream come true.

25. Which mountain is the most dangerous one according to the text?

A. Mount Vinson. B. Mount McKinley.

C. Mount Everest. D. Mount Kilimanjaro.

26. What can make Romero secure when climbing Mount Everest?

A. His team members figure out a detailed plan ahead of time.

B. His team observe his reaction to the low-oxygen conditions.

C. The experienced guides provide him with useful suggestions.

D. He is accompanied by his parents and can turn to them for help.

27. What is the best title of the text?

A. The Biggest Challenge for a Boy

B. A Boy and His Team Members

C. The Highest Mountain in the World

D. The Youngest to Climb Mount Everest

For thousands of years, humans have used names to communicate with one another. We also

give names to animals, especially ones we love, such as pets. Until now there has been little evidence

of animals naming one another, but a new study suggests that elephants use specific noises to identify

other elephants.

A few animals, including parrots and dolphins, have been known to use sounds that are similar

to names. Each dolphin invents a signature whistle that is unique to it, and other members of its

species communicate with it by imitating(模仿) this special call. The new study, led by Michael

Pardo of Colorado State University, shows that wild African elephants use names in a way that is not

just copying sounds and is much closer to the way humans use names.

For the study, the researchers recorded 625 sounds made by wild African elephants in Kenya

that they called “ rumbles ( 隆 隆 声 ) . This is the most common type of call produced by

elephants, and it can travel long distances-as far as 3. 7 miles. It takes place at a very low frequency,

which means humans can't hear it.

The researchers analyzed the sounds using computers and found that certain rumbles were

directed at specific elephants to get their attention. They found that all the elephants in the herd used

the identical call to get a particular elephant's attention-these calls were not just nicknames used by

one of the elephant's friends. Also, unlike the way dolphins communicate, the rumbles were not

imitations of the elephant they were trying to communicate with.

The researchers then played back some of the recorded rumbles to the elephants. They found

that elephants responded more to their own name than to other calls, coming toward it more quickly

or calling back faster. Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, an elephant expert, said, The study shows that

elephants can still keep in touch with one another even across a large area. She told Live Science,

“ It allows them to spread out much further and still have very close tabs( 密 切 关 注 ) on

individuals.

28. How can elephants recognize others according to the new study?

A. By employing certain sounds. B. By using a signature whistle.

C. By giving out specific smells. D. By adopting particular postures.

29. What can be inferred about Michael Pardo's research?

A. Its findings were not accepted by the public.

B. It asked researchers to analyze elephants' lives.

C. Its researchers needed to engage in outdoor work.

D. It revealed elephants' sounds are at a high frequency.

30. Why do elephants use the same call?

A. To get noticed by the herd.

B. To imitate other elephants.

C. To lead the way for other elephants.

D. To draw a specific elephant's attention.

31. Which of the following does Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell agree with?

A. Elephants only respond to their own names.

B. Elephants can walk very far without losing the way.

C. Rumbles can help elephants interact with each other.

D. Rumbles are imitations of the elephant they were communicating with.

Nearly 50 billion pieces of litter are thrown along US roadways and waterways, according to a

2020 study by the non-profit Keep America Beautiful (KAB). That estimate includes more than

800 million pieces of fast-food packaging, 2. 6 billion food-packaging-film items, and 207 million

pieces of personal protective equipment, like masks and gloves. Not all litter, however, is intentional.

A large volume of litter also comes from unsecured items that fall off the back of vehicles or out of

trash receptacles(容器).

To address the country's ongoing litter problem, some public libraries are creating kits to help

people clean up their neighborhoods.

We want people to be involved in the community, says Samantha Hanchett, marketing

coordinator(协调者) at Thomas County Public Library System (TCPLS). “Doing something

that benefits everyone, even though it's quite quiet, is really what a library does all the time.

The library system launched a litter clean-up program with Keep Thomas County Beautiful (

KTCB), the local KAB chapter(地方分会), in 2020. Actually, the chapter had previously held

group clean-up events and naturally inspired more individual or joint efforts. As a result, KTCB

partnered with the library to create kits for people in the library to check out.

Each kit contains items such as trash bags, gloves, reflective vests, and a booklet with guidance-

lines and suggestions for where to clean up in the community. Litter kits are housed at the library

system's main branch in Thomasville, but people can request they be sent to their local branch for

pick-up.

Hanchett estimates that kits are checked out between 30 and 45 times each year, noting that they

are most popular with groups and grade school students. People like the convenience of the kits

because it's something they can do on their own time, she says. It's an elastic way of getting

involved instead of having an appointed time in which you take part in the activity.

32. Why are the data mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A. To indicate the pressing litter issue in the US.

B. To show the people's habits of throwing litter.

C. To present convincing proof of environmental issues.

D. To urge people to preserve roadways and waterways.

33. What is the library always doing?

A. Trying to carry out something to benefit all.

B. Removing the litter by uniting common people.

C. Asking people to get involved in the community.

D. Doing some quiet things to advocate environmental protection.

34. What can we know about KTCB?

A. It created clean-up kits for people to buy.

B. It could stimulate people to borrow kits.

C. It used to launch similar clean-up projects.

D. It was good at holding litter clean-up programs.

35. Which of the following can replace elastic underlined in Paragraph 6?

A. Dull. B. Tense. C. Flexible. D. Entertaining.

In the fast-paced rhythm of modern life, the act of eating has often become a hurried and

mindless routine. 36 Mindful eating, rooted in ancient practices, offers a refreshing alternative-a

pathway to improved well-being and a deeper connection with our food.

The journey into mindful eating begins with the simple act of pausing. 37 Sit comfortably,

take a few deep breaths, and distance from electronic devices or work-related materials. This pause

sets the tone for a mindful eating experience, creating a space where you can fully engage with the

nourishment(养分) and the present moment.

Rather than mindlessly consuming large quantities of food, use visual cues(提示,暗示),

such as the size of your palm or a closed fist, to measure appropriate serving sizes. 38

As you eat, tune in to your body's fullness signals. Instead of sticking to external cues or rigid

meal schedules, let your body guide you. Don't forget to chew thoroughly. It supports the digestive

process by breaking down food into smaller particles, making it easier for your body to absorb

nutrients. 39 Aim to chew each bite at least 20 times. By adopting a more leisurely approach to

meals, you invite a sense of relaxation into your dining experience.

Among the focus on food, it's crucial to extend mindfulness to hydration( 水 合 作 用 ) .

Drinking water is an inseparable part of the eating experience. Before, during, and after your meal,

take moments to hydrate. Mindful hydration complements the act of eating, contributing to overall

well-being and ensuring that your body is adequately nourished and hydrated.

40 It becomes a mindfulness practice that fuels not only your body but also your soul.

A. Common as it is, it is unhealthy.

B. Mindful eating goes beyond the act of consuming food.

C. This approach emphasized on the quantity rather than the quality of your food.

D. Before diving into your meal, take a moment to create a specific space for eating.

E. By dedicating time to eat without multitasking, you honour the food on your plate.

F. Portion awareness is not about restriction but about a balanced relationship with food.

G. Additionally, it provides your brain with the time it needs to register feelings of fullness.
