Lizard, and the Desert Rattlesnake, their device gathers the dew in the air, channels the collected water

through a filter (过滤器) , and stores the water in a container for drinking purpose. The idea addresses the

problem of lack of access to clean water by providing an economically practical solution.

Rain Net

In recent years, extreme weather has caused severe flooding in California, and yet, for most of this

team’s life, California has been in a drought. Addressing both problems at once, the team designed a rain

catchment device, Rain Net. Inspired by how plants move water and the patterns of leaf veins, the Rain Net

has got inspiration from the xylem (木质部) in plants, in its design of tubes that guide, collect, and filter

rainwater. The invention could be adapted to fit various roofs and the design makes it possible to connect

various “nets,” allowing for more than one drainage (排水) system.

The outstanding biography portrays (刻画) the life of the complicated Renaissance (文艺复兴) artist

with details. We come to see da Vinci as not only an inventor of music al instruments and early flying

machines, but also a notebook keeper and vegetarian, who had trouble finishing many of the projects and

paintings he started.

Yet what is most thrilling is getting to know da Vinci the scientist. Isaacson explains how loving

science and applying the scientific method to observing the world was really what made da Vinci a great

artist and, Isaacson argues, a genius. Da Vinci was fascinated with observing and understanding phenomena

in nature. He wanted to know about everything around him, in minute detail, Isaacson writes. He wondered

about questions “most people over the age of ten no longer puzzle about”— for instance, how the tongue of a

woodpecker works.

To learn about the world, da Vinci combined his own observations with experimentation. Never

formally schooled, “he preferred to induce (归纳) from experiments rather than deduce (推理) from

theoretical principles.” Isaacson explains. He recorded his observations, looked for patterns among them, and

then tested those patterns through additional observation and experimentation.

When he became fascinated with the idea that he could invent flying machines, he observed various

birds and filled notebooks with the function and speed at which their wings flapped. That’s why Isaacson

calls da Vinci an exemplar of this scientific method. He goes on: “Galileo, born 112 years after Leonardo, is

usually credited with being the first to develop this kind of approach and is often regarded as the father of

modern science.” There can be no doubt that this honor would have been bestowed (赠与) on Leonardo da

Vinci had he published his scientific writings during his lifetime.

Da Vinci’s emphasis on empirical observation also helped him improve his art. First, he was able to

use what he learned from looking at nature to paint and draw. His studies of the body, animals, motion,

shadow and light, perspective and proportion helped him better understand what he was seeing in front of

him, and render(表现) it in art more accurately and finely than anyone else of his time. Most importantly, his

ability to connect art and science, helped him innovate in his work. Da Vinci made surprisingly diverse series

of discoveries, including conceptualizing the helicopter and solar power and advancing knowledge about

everything from the reproductive organs to botany. This genius is also what drew Isaacson to Albert Einstein

and Steve Jobs as subjects: They’ re all innovators who were inspired by and drew connections between art

and science.

“Leonardo da Vinci is the ultimate example of the main theme of my previous biographies: how the

ability to make connections across disciplines — arts and sciences, humanities and technology — is a key to

innovation, imagination, and genius,” Isaacson writes. And this wonderful book is a reminder, in a time of

increasingly narrow specialization and focus, that the methods of Renaissance men like da Vinci are as

relevant as ever.

Mark Temple, a medical molecular (分子的) biologist, used to spend a lot of time in his lab

researching new drugs for cancer treatments. He would extract DNA from cells and then add a drug to see

where it was binding (结合) along the chemical sequence (序列). Before he introduced the drug, he’d look at

DNA combination on a screen to see what might work best for the experiment, but the visual readout of the

sequences was often unimaginably large.

So Temple wondered if there was an easier way to detect favorable patterns. “I realized I wanted to

hear the sequence,” says Temple, who is also a musician. He started his own system of assigning notes to the

different elements of DNA — human DNA is made of four distinct bases, so it was easy to start off with four

notes — and made a little tune out of his materials. This trick indeed helped him better spot patterns in the

sequences, which allowed him to make better choices about which DNA combinations to use.

Temple isn’t the first person to turn scientific data into sound. In the past 40 years, researchers have

gone from exploring this trick as a fun way to spot patterns in their studies to using it as a guide to discovery.

And the scientific community has come to realize that there’s some long-term value in this type of work.

Temple, who from that first experiment has created his own algorithmic software to turn data into sound,

believes the resulting music can be used to improve research and science communication.

So Temple decided to add layers of sound to make the sonification (可听化) into songs. He sees a clear

difference between “sonification” and “musification”. Using sound to represent data is scientific, but very

different from using creative input to make songs. The musical notes from DNA may be melodic to the

human ear, but they don’t sound like a song you’d listen to on the radio. So when he tried to sonify the virus,

he added layers of drums and guitar, and had some musician friends add their own music to turn the virus into

a full-blown post-rock song.

Temple sees this work as an effective communication tool that will help a general audience understand

complex systems in biology. He has performed his songs in public at concert halls in Australia.

Perhaps no one knows the power of imagination better than Chinese writer Liu Cixin. Until four years

ago, Liu worked full-time as a computer engineer at a power plant in Shanxi province. He only wrote science

fiction in his spare time. But it was during this time that Liu’s imagination took flight. He did what he might

never have the chance to do in real life — wander in space, fight with aliens, and visit planets light-years

away.

But even with such a powerful imagination, Liu, 55, probably hadn’t expected that he would become

the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, science fiction’s highest prize, in 2015. Perhaps neither did he think

that former US president Barack Obama would read his novel The Three-Body Problem, nor that on Nov 9 in

Washington DC, he would win the 2018 Arthur C. Clarke Award for Imagination in Service to Society. It’s

the first time a Chinese writer has ever won the award.

In his acceptance speech, Liu said that he owed his imagination to Arthur C. Clarke (1917 — 2008),

a famous UK sci-fi author. He said that reading Clarke’s 1968 classic novel 2001: A Space Odyssey in the

early 1980s had a great effect on him.

“My mind opened up like never before. I felt like a narrow river finally seeing the sea,” Liu said. “That

night, in my eyes, the starry sky was completely different from the past. For the first time in my life, I was

awed (充满敬畏的) by the mystery of the universe.”

But no matter how far away Liu’s imagination takes him, somehow his novels always stay rational (理

性的). In The Three-Body Problem, for example, Liu tells a tale of aliens invading Earth. But unlike other
