Like many other five-year-olds, Jeanie Low of Houston, Texas, would use a stool (凳子) to
help her reach the bathroom sink. However, the plastic step-stool she had at home was unstable
and messed up the small bathroom shared by her whole family. After learning of an invention
3
{#{QQABBYQUggigAhAAABgCAQWKCgGQkAGAACoOAFAEsAABwAFABAA=}#}
contest held by her school that year, Jeanie resolved to enter the contest by creating a stool that
would be a permanent fixture in the bathroom, and yet could be kept out of the way when not in
use.
Jeanie decided to make a stool attached to the bathroom cabinet door under the sink. She
cut a board of wood into two pieces, each about two feet wide and one foot long. Using metal
hinges (铰链), Jeanie attached one piece of the wood to the front of the cabinet door, and the
second piece to the first. The first piece was set just high enough so that when it swung out
horizontally from the cabinet door, the second piece would swing down from the first, just
touching the ground, and so serving as a support for the first piece of the wood. This created a
convenient, strong platform for any person too short to reach the sink. When not in use, the
hinges allowed the two pieces of wood to fold back up tightly against the cabinet, where they
were held in place by magnets (磁铁). Jeanie called her invention “the Kiddie Stool”.
Jeanie’s Kiddie Stool won first place in her school’s contest. Two years later, it was
awarded first prize again at Houston’s first annual Invention Fair. As a result, Jeanie was invited
to make a number of public appearances with her Kiddie Stool, and was featured on local TV as
well as in newspapers. Many people found the story of the Kiddie Stool inspiring because it
showed that with a pair of observant eyes, anyone can be an inventor.
24. According to the passage, why did Jeanie Low invent the Kiddie Stool?
A. Many other five-year-olds had problems reaching the bathroom sink.
B. She did not think that plastic stools were tall enough for her.
C. The stool in her bathroom was not firm and often got in the way.
D. She was invited to enter an invention contest held by her school.
25. Which of the following statements is true about how the Kiddie Stool works?
A. The platform is supported by two metal hinges.
B. It swings from left to right to be attached to the cabinet door.
C. It uses hinges and magnets to keep the wooden pieces in place.
D. The Kiddie Stool will swing out only when the cabinet door opens.
26. What are the characteristics of Jeanie’s Kiddie Stool?
A. Permanent and foldable. B. Fragile and disposable.
C. Conventional and portable. D. Convenient and recyclable.
27. What message does the passage convey?
A. Failure is the mother of success.
B. Necessity is the mother of invention.
C. Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration.
D. Invention requires both disciplines and wild imagination.

Imagine if there were a robotic fish that filtered (过滤) microplastic out of the water as it
swam. Well, now there is one, and it’s the physical version of the winning concept in the
first-ever Natural Robotics Contest.
Announced this May, the University of Surrey’s Natural Robots Contest invited members of
the public to submit their ideas for animal-or plant-inspired robots capable of performing
4
{#{QQABBYQUggigAhAAABgCAQWKCgGQkAGAACoOAFAEsAABwAFABAA=}#}
activities that would help the world.
Plans called for experts from various British and European research institutes to select what
they thought was the best concept, which would subsequently be made into a functional type.
Engineers would proceed to further develop the technology.
The winning entry turned out to be the plastic-collecting Robo-fish, designed by chemistry
undergrad Eleanor Mackintosh — who is a University of Surrey student. Mackintosh said,
“Fish’s gills are an incredible mechanism in nature that are specialized to filter oxygen into the
bloodstream--so I adapted my design from that, with the purpose of addressing the plastic
pollution in the water.”
The robot swims by moving its tail, holding its mouth wide open to collect water and
microplastics in an internal cavity (腔) as it does so. Once that cavity is full, the robot closes its
mouth, opens its gill flaps (鳃瓣) , and pushes the water out through those flaps by raising the
floor of the cavity. A fine net attached to the gill flaps allows the water to pass through, but
captures the microplastic.
In its current physical form, the 50-cm-long Robo-fish collects microplastic as small as
2millimeters. It also sports onboard sensors to monitor underwater environment, plus it uses an
IMU (inertial measurement unit) to track its movements within the water.
That said future style could capture much smaller particles. Other possible improvements
include a faster, more hydrodynamic body shape, a more powerful tail, and the ability to swim
autonomously— the current type works by hard-wired remote control.
28. How do the participants attend the Natural Robotics Contest?
A. By submitting the concepts of robots.
B. By selecting the best concept of robots.
C. By developing the technology of robots.
D. By making the physical version of robots.
29. What inspired Mackintosh to design the robot?
A. The body shape of the fish. B. The function of fish’s gills.
C. The enthusiasm for robots. D. The plastic pollution in the water.
30. What is mainly talked about in paragraph 5?
A. What materials the robotic fish is made of. B. How the robotic fish is further improved.
C. Why Mackintosh’s robot won the contest. D. How the robotic fish filters microplastics.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. The first bio-inspired robotics contest.
B. The one-size-fits-all solution to plastics.
C. An autonomously operating robotic fish.
D. A student-designed plastic-collecting fish.

Schools need to give students all the tools they need to navigate the world when they
graduate. Besides teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about
mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young people to have, the state of
Florida agrees.

{#{QQABBYQUggigAhAAABgCAQWKCgGQkAGAACoOAFAEsAABwAFABAA=}#}
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental
health for students in grades 6-12. This new directive was approved by the Florida Board of
Education in July and is being carried out as a potential lifesaver.
The new curriculum requires students to learn about the symptoms of mental illness and
where to find help if they are feeling depressed or have other issues and even teaches the
adolescents how to help their friends and classmates if they see them struggling.
“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being
active in our commitment to provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their
successes and challenges. Providing mental health instruction is another important step forward
in supporting our families,” Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said.
Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require
mental health education in schools. According to CNN, the New York law updated the health
curriculum to include mental health for elementary, middle and high school students. The
Virginia law required that mental health education be provided for 9th and 10th graders.
These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of
life as they grow from adolescents into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them
the tools to navigate it safely is essential. Mental health is something that should be taught in
schools in all the US and across the globe.
32. What can the new curriculum bring students?
A. Basic professional skills. B. The ability to use language.
C. Emotional management skills. D. Diagnosis of physical diseases.
33. What does Richard Corcoran intend to stress in paragraph 4?
A. The effect of mental illness cases.
B. The content of the health curriculum.
C. The step of mental health instruction.
D. The importance of mental health education.
34. What does the underlined word “intricacy” mean in paragraph 6?
A. Complexity. B. Purpose. C. Contribution. D. Significance.
35. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A technology report. B. A natural science magazine.
C. An educational website. D. A government document.

Your neighbors are probably the first line of defense in case of any problematic situation.
36 It gives you an assurance that you have people close by looking out for you. Here are
easily applicable tips on creating stronger neighbor relationships.
The first step is introducing yourself when you move to a new neighborhood or when a
newcomer moves in. Leave them a note under their door to introduce yourself. 37 It
doesn’t have to cost you a fortune and opting for a potted plant or baked biscuits will do. These
actions present excellent opportunities to connect with them.
6
{#{QQABBYQUggigAhAAABgCAQWKCgGQkAGAACoOAFAEsAABwAFABAA=}#}
Be respectful of your neighbors. It’s in poor taste to have regular insensitive parties at your
place causing disturbances. Before your party, it’s good practice to notify your neighbors.
Besides, avoid chatting them up for hours on end, which may be inconvenient, especially if you
don’t know their schedules. 38 When you borrow anything, return it in due time. If
you accidentally break their things, replace them without being asked to.
39 You could offer to babysit your neighbors’ kids, help with snow removals or
even keep an eye on their home when they’re away. Such acts of reaching out to your neighbors
make for stronger relationships.
As Emma Seppl put it, “social connectedness generates a positive feedback loop (圈) of
social, emotional and physical well-being.” It feels so easy to just stay home without having to
engage with your neighbors but connecting with them is worth the effort. 40
A.Remember every small gesture counts.
B.A crisis is a test of communication skills.
C.It can actually boost your mood in the long run.
D.Slipping it in their mailbox further solidifies friendship.
E.It’s essential to ensure you maintain decent relationships with them.
F.Alternatively, you can give them a gift while making yourself known to them.
G.Only by establishing healthy boundaries will you achieve peaceful coexistence.

第二节(满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My little sister, Meg, said that she wasn't afraid of the dark anymore and she’d be OK
staying with Aunt Lily in the country. “As long as you're there, Mike,” she had said. Still, Mum
was worried. Meg had never slept away from home, away from the city. So I told Mum I could
handle everything.
Even though we were only staying overnight, Meg had brought six books-all about fairies.
After we unpacked, Aunt Lily invited us to pick some flowers. As we followed her through the
forest, Meg held my hand tightly. But once we reached the sunlit grassland, she let go.
“Butterflies!” whispered Meg. She screamed with delight when one flew near her.
Maybe I had nothing to worry about, I thought. I still remembered when I was here last
summer, I found some amazing insects, like fireflies(萤火虫) and walking sticks which I'd never
seen in the city.
“Fairies are magical. See these beautiful flowers they grow!” she kept telling absolutely
everything she knew about fairies. I was glad that if she kept it up until bedtime, then maybe
she’d fall right to sleep.
Meg did keep chatting, right through supper. Then the sun began to set. “Does it get really
dark out here at night?” she asked. Her eyes were fixed on the window.
“Sure, but we've got plenty of lights inside,” said Aunt Lily. She leaned over and gave Meg
a warm smile. But I could tell she was still worried. “I could read to you.”
I hadn’t even finished a page when her bottom lip started shaking slightly. “Mike,” she said,
her eyes starting to fill. “I want to go home.” I quickly searched through her book for something
to keep her from crying.
The book fell open to a page that was dog-eared from use, a page that was obviously one of
Meg’s favorites. The text read: “Among the trees deep in the forest, the lights of fairies gleam
(闪烁).” Aha! How could I forget those “tiny fairies” out there?
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

“Meg, there's something outside I want to show you, I whispered. Amusement tinged my
voice as I tried to draw her attention to the outside. “It’s too dark!” Meg shook her head, with
fear written all over her face. Before I could say anything else, she burst into tears and curled up
in my arms, begging me to take her home. “Do you want to see the tiny fairies?”I whispered
again, praying quietly that I could capture her interest. Much to my relief, the mention of
“fairies” seemed to work wonders. Meg dried her tears, looking up at me with misty eyes filled
with curiosity. “Where are they?” she asked eagerly as I placed her by the window, drawing
back the curtains to reveal the gleaming fireflies.
“ Tiny fairies, Mike! she said, leaning her forehead against the window, “Everywhere!
There in the dark of the night, an enchanting scene unfolded as numerous fireflies illuminated
the surroundings. “Fairies are magical. They drive away the darkness!”Meg exclaimed with
sheer delight, completely forgetting her fear. “Yes, they are!” I nodded with a smile of
agreement. She chattered excitedly about the magical fairies until she grew drowsy. Resting in
my arms, Meg gazed outside the window with rapt attention, completely captivated by the
gleaming creatures. It didn't take long before she fell sound asleep. Stroking her head
affectionately, I breathed a sigh of relief. A sense of achievement rose up, not only for my
success in lulling my little sister to sleep, but also for helping her overcome her fear of darkness.
