On my son Andrew’s 15th birthday, I took him to a shoe store to get a pair of shoes. We arrived right when the
store opened because Andrew is a nonspeaking autistic (自闭 ) and prefers shopping when it’s not busy. After
choosing the desired shoes, we paid and thanked the clerks. “It’s Andrew’s birthday today. Fifteen!” I said. “Happy
birthday!” they said. “Have fun!”
Instead of having Andrew point to the “thank you” symbol on his picture chart, I hold up his letter board. For 10
years, Andrew has used a picture chart to communicate. The images represent important and common words; people,
places, food, greetings and activities. Years ago, we discovered that Andrew could communicate more than just his
basic needs via a letter board. He can point to the letters and spell out words, statements, thoughts.
Using the letter board requires significant time and effort for Andrew, but it gives him an opportunity to share far
more of who he is than he can convey through pictures and basic words. So instead of dashing out, I hold up the letter
board and ask Andrew how he’d like to respond. The store clerks are quiet, watching. Andrew points to each letter,
one by one: “Thank you.” I smile and turn to leave.
One of the clerks, a man about my age, speaks up: “Um, can I ask you ... what is that? Because I have a
brother-in-law ... and he doesn’t talk.” “Oh! This is an alphabet board that Andrew uses to communicate,” I reply.
“We’ve practiced it for years. It’s quite incredible, as we just didn’t know Andrew was so ‘in there’. We didn’t even
know this tool existed-it’s relatively uncommon. It’s changed everything for us, for our family, for Andrew.”
This is what happens when we invite others into our humanness, and we allow them to share theirs. “Let me give
you my contact info, as well as the website of the spelling-to-communicate organization,” I continue. I ask the clerk
about his brother-in-law. He tells us that Jason is 30 and doesn’t prefer to speak, but he can do a lot for himself. Still,
no one really knows him. Maybe there’s more, the clerk wonders.
“Amazing!” I say. “We’ve met people-haven’t we, Andrew? —who started using this method when they were 50
or 5 or 15! Andrew, what do you think?” Andrew starts pointing to letters: “Tell Jason…”
I choke up. Sometimes I forget how powerful the letter board is. How ’powerful Andrew is. “Tell Jason he will
change everyone’s opinion of him in 26 letters.” We are all moved, inspired, thrilled.
“Wow,” the clerk says.
“Thank you.” Andrew smiles.
24. What is the purpose of the letter board mentioned in the passage?
A. To display birthday messages. B. To communicate using pictures.
C. To spell out words and convey thoughts. D. To create an alphabet chart.
25. Why does the store clerk inquire about the letter board?
A. He is curious about the author’s shopping preferences. B. He wants to know if the letter board is for sale.
C. He has a relative who doesn’t prefer to speak. D. He is trying to sell a similar communication device.
26. What does Andrew mean when he points to the letters and says, “Tell Jason he will change everyone’s opinion of
him in 26 letters”?
A. Jason should learn to use the letter board. B. Jason has the power to influence people.
C. Jason’s opinions about others will change. D. Jason needs to express himself in 26 words.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Power of 26 Letters B. Uncommon Communication Methods
C. Communication Tools and Autism D. The Power of A Birthday Present
C
In Shark Bay, Australia, bottlenose dolphins that aren’t related have been observed teaching each other a new
way to use a tool, a behavior that until now scientists have found only in humans and other great apes. It’s also the
first known example of dolphins transmitting such knowledge within the same generation, rather than between
generations.
In a practice called shelling, dolphins will chase fish into abandoned giant snail shells on the seafloor, then bring
the shells to the surface, and shake them with their noses, removing the water and catching the fish that fall out.
“The fact that shelling is socially transmitted among dolphin peers rather than between mother and child sets an
important milestone,” senior study author Michael Krutzen said.
In 2007, Krutzen launched a study of Shark Bay’s dolphins, identifying more than a thousand individual dolphins
over 11 years. During this time, scientists observed shelling 42times among 19 dolphins. Half of these events occurred
after a marine heatwave in 2011, which may have caused a die-off among giant sea snails, leading to more shells on
the seafloor.
Because of the length of their study, scientists had very detailed knowledge of the individual dolphins’ family
histories, ages, sexes and behavior, making it easier for them to study the 19 dolphins that practiced shelling. For
instance, they observed that the dolphins that practised shelling hung out with other shellers, so it’s likely that they
copied from those they spent time with, says study lead author Sonja Wild.
The team knew that environmental factors-specifically, whether shelling dolphins did so simply because they
lived in a shell-rich area-could explain this peer-to-peer transmission. A genetic characteristic among a family group
was another possible reason.
So the researchers combined their data on the dolphin sightings, as well as genetic and environmental data, into a
computer model that proposed various ways shelling could be transmitted between dolphins. The model that
supported horizontal (横向的) transmission was the strongest outcome, according to the study.

DNA testing is one of modern medicine’s most significant breakthroughs. Today, anyone can receive
personalized information about their genes and ancestry with just a little saliva (唾液). Now, a Seattle-based company
is working to bring equally deep analysis to the trillions of proteins within our bodies.
Nautilus Biotechnology, a company founded in 2016 by Seattle’s Sujal Patel and the San Francisco Bay Area’s
Parag Mallick, is developing a device to identify and count 95% of the different types of proteins in a biological
sample.
Human cells can contain roughly 20,000 different types of proteins, with crucial functions ranging from digestion
to disease protection. Each cell has a varying amount of each protein. The company wants to measure the key
machinery (系统) inside cells with a level of detail that has never been done before. Existing tools, it says, can only
measure up to 8% of the different types of proteins in blood samples.
So why do people count proteins? Research shows healthy cells and diseased cells have differing amounts and
forms of each protein. For example, cancer cells may have more of Protein A than Protein B. Knowing that might
help in two ways. First, doctors could look for higher Protein A levels to detect cancer early. Second, researchers
could better design drugs to target Protein A.
Nautilus says such protein measurements, which are unique to every person and change throughout people’s
lives, will not only help doctors identify more specific forms of disease but also help pharmaceutical (制药的 )
companies find more precise drugs with fewer side effects.
While other companies also are building new protein analysis machines, experts and prospective customers have
expressed excitement over Nautilus’s approach. Mallick, chief scientist of Nautilus and the brains behind its
technology, is confident. “It’s not every day that you get ... to work on something that’s the opportunity to change all
of biology.”
32. What is the Seattle-based company doing?
A. Trying to count the amounts of blood cells. B. Examining DNA for personalized information.
C. Developing a device to analyze people’s proteins. D. Revealing more about our ancestries with DNA testing.
33. What makes the invention of the device possible?
A. Precise drugs are guaranteed. B. Cell analysis techniques develop fast.
C. Proteins are much easier to be analyzed. D. Protein amounts and forms vary from cell to cell.
34. In which area will the device be helpful?
A. Disease monitoring and machine design. B. Disease detection and drug development.
C. Disease prevention and targeted treatment. D. Disease treatment and the prevention of side effects.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Combining DNA Testing with Protein Analysis B. Setting a New Example of Medical Solutions
C. Creating Opportunities for Changing Biology D. Analysing Proteins for New Medical Breakthroughs

China’s Qiantang River is famous for a unique natural phenomenon, a wavy pattern tide that was observed in
2021.
The Qiantang River’s estuary (河口) in Zhejiang Province has long been famous for having the strongest tidal
waves in the world. 36 However, in 2021, researchers discovered another natural phenomenon unique to this
estuary. Under specific conditions, the tide comes in waves that look like fish scales (鳞) on the water’s surface. 37
The exact reason for this unusual tide pattern’s occurrence is still being discussed. Different sources give
different reasons. 38
“The area is also known to have rotating currents, meaning that the tide does not simply move inland and then
change its direction,” Nicole Sharp writes. “ 39 This unique characteristic creates an ideal environment for waves
to crash into each other at various angles. Two sets of waves meet at a crossroads, creating cool wave patterns.”
According to the media, astronomy, topography, and wind directions are the main factors that produce the “fish
scale tide”. 40 So does the shape of the estuary—very narrow at the river mouth, but then very wide where it
meets the sea.
Whatever the exact necessary conditions for the occurrence of the “fish scale tide” may be, one thing is for
sure-it rarely happens.
A. The phenomenon is known as the “fish scale tide”.
B. Instead, a rotating current can change its direction during a tidal cycle without changing its speed.
C. People always get endangered there.
D. Apparently, the moon and the sun play a big part in the phenomenon.
E. Besides, the weather conditions are of great importance.
F. For example, FyFluidDyamics believes that the phenomenon is the result of a series of factors.
G. At times, they can get as tall as nine meters.

In the heart of the forest, there was an annual event that all animals looked forward to—the Great Forest Race.
The big animals, like the majestic deer, the powerful bears, and the swift foxes, always dominated the race. They
believed that their size and strength were the keys to victory.
Among the small animals, there was a brave rabbit named Hopper who had always dreamt of winning the Great
Forest Race. Hopper was small, but he had quick feet and a determined spirit.
The day of the race arrived, and the forest was filled with excitement. The big animals took off, their powerful
legs carrying them swiftly through the forest. The small animals, led by Hopper, followed closely behind.
As the race progressed, the big animals began to slow down. Their size and strength, which they had thought
were advantages, became obstacles as they struggled to navigate the twisty paths and steep hills of the forest.
Hopper, on the other hand, bounded gracefully over the obstacles. His small size allowed him to weave through
the trees with ease, and his determination kept him going strong.
One by one, the big animals began to fall behind. They watched in amazement as Hopper and the other small
animals passed them by.
Finally, the small animals, led by Hopper, had not only participated but had also triumphed in face of adversity.
The big animals realized that they had been wrong to underestimate the small animals. They had judged them based
on their size, without considering their skills or determination.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
From that day forward, the big animals treated the small animals with respect.
