Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower isn’t just a symbol of Paris, but a symbol for all of France.Established by
Gustave Eiffel to memorize the French Revolution in 1889,the 1,050-foot(320-metre)tower
once held the title of the world’s tallest structure.
The basics
The Eiffel Tower’s first floor features exhibits,kid-friendly experiences, and the 58 Tour
Eiffel restaurant; the second floor includes the Jules Verne Restaurant; and the third-floor
summit, accessible via a glass elevator, features Gustave Eiffel’s private apartments and a
Champagne bar.Of course, all levels offer striking 360-degree views of the City of Light.
Given the structure’s global popularity, the crowds can be quite large, meaning that
priority-access tours are highly recommended—in peak season, long lines mean that waits can
often be over 3 hours. Save precious sightseeing time by booking a skip-the-line Eiffel Tower
ticket with or without a tour guide;this experience can be combined with a Paris city tour.If
you’d rather view the iconic(标志性的)structure in all its glory than head to the top, book a
Seine River cruise(巡航),or a walking,biking,or Segway tour.
Things to know before you go
Plan your visit in advance and book skip-the-line tickets to avoid a long wait time.
If you purchase an admission ticket for Eiffel Tower summit access, you’ll head straight to
the top before stopping at the lower levels on your downward journey.
There are ATMs and souvenir shops on the ground floor.
The tower’s first two levels are wheelchair accessible, but the summit is not.
You’ll be required to undergo a security screening before entering the tower.
How to get there
Take metro line 6 to Bir Hakeim or RER line C to the Champ de Mars station. For better
views, take metro line 6 or 9 to the Trocadero stop across from the River Seine.
21.On which floor are there the most children probably?
A.The first floor B.The second floor.C.The third floor. D.The top floor.
22.What do you know about going to Eiffel Tower?
A.You can’t take a wheelchair inside.
B.You must buy a skip-the-line ticket to visit it.
C.You can take metro line 9 to Bir Hakeim station.
D.You can reach the top with an admission ticket for summit access.
23.Where is this text probably taken from?
A.A science fiction. B.A travel brochure.
C.A news report. D.A diary.

Mary Flannery O’Connor was born on March twenty-fifth, 1925, in the southern city of
Savannah, Georgia. The year she was born, her father developed a rare disease called lupus
3
(狼疮).He died of the disease in 1941.By that time the family was living in the small southern
town of Milledgeville,Georgia,in a house owned by Flannery’s mother.
Life in a small town in the American South was what O’Connor knew best.Yet she said,“If
you know who you are, you can go anywhere. ” Many people in the town of Milledgeville
thought she was different from other girls. She was kind to everyone, but she seemed to stand to
one side of what was happening, as if she wanted to see it better. Her mother was her
example. Her mother said,“I was brought up to be nice to everyone and not to tell my business
to anyone.”
Flannery also did not talk about herself. But in her writing a silent and distant anger explodes
from the quiet surface of her stories. Some see her as a Roman Catholic(天主教的)religious
writer. They see her anger as the search to save her moral being through her belief in Jesus
Christ. Some see her not writing about things, but presenting the things themselves. She said,
“I see the world from the perspective of Christianity. This means that for me,the meaning of life
is focused on Christ’s redemption(救赎)of us,and everything in the world is related to it in my
eyes.”
The following year,1949,she moved to New York City. She soon left the city and lived
with her friend Robert Fitzgerald and his family in the northeastern state of
Connecticut. Fitzgerald says O’Connor needed to be alone to work during the day. And she
needed her friends to talk to when her work was done.
While writing her first novel,Wise Blood, she was stricken with the disease lupus that had
killed her father. The treatment for lupus weakened her.She moved back to Georgia and lived
the rest of her life with her mother on a farm outside Milledgeville.
24.Who may have a big influence on Mary Flannery O’Connor?
A.Her father. B.Her mother. C.Her friends. D.Her readers.
25.Which of the following can best describe Mary Flannery O’Connor?
A.Strong-willed and selfless. B.Optimistic and independent.
C.Responsible and talkative. D.Kind and religious.
26.What do we learn about Mary Flannery O’Connor from the text?
A.She lived a lonely life. B.Her life was full of difficulty.
C.Her health was affected by lupus. D.Her stories revealed her courage.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.Mary Flannery O’Connor’s Lifetime B.Belief of a Great Writer
C.Writing of Mary Flannery O’Connor D.Kindness of a Writer

When lightning caused fires around California’s Big Basin Redwoods State Park north of
Santa Cruz in August 2020,the fire spread quickly.Mild fires strike coastal redwood(红杉)
forests about every decade. The giant trees resist burning thanks to the bark(树皮),up to about
30 centimetres thick at the base, which contains acids.Their branches and needles are normally
beyond the reach of flames. But this time flames shot through the top of 100-metre-tall trees,
burning the needles.“It was shocking,” says Drew Peltier,a tree expert at Northern Arizona
4
University.“It really seemed like most of the trees were going to die.”
Yet many of them lived. In a paper published yesterday in Nature Plants,Peltier and his
colleagues help explain why:The survivors use long-held energy reserves—sugars that had been
made from sunlight decades earlier—and poured them into buds(芽)that had been lying dormant
(休眠的)under the bark for centuries.
“This is one of those papers that challenges our previous knowledge on tree growth,” says
Adrian Rocha,an ecosystem ecologist at the University of Notre Dame.“It is amazing to learn
that carbon taken up decades ago can be used to sustain its growth into the future.” The findings
suggest redwoods have the tools to cope with big fires driven by climate change, Rocha
says.Still,it’s unclear whether the trees could cope with the regular infernos that might occur
under a warmer climate environment.
The fire in 2020 was so intense that even the top branches of many trees burned and their
ability to photosynthesize(光合作用)went up in smoke along with their pine needles.Trees
photosynthesize to create sugars and other carbohydrates( 碳 水 化 合 物 ), which provide the
energy they need to grow and repair tissue.Trees do store some of this energy, which they can
call on during a drought or after a fire. Although the redwoods have sprouted( 长 出 ) new
growth,Peltier and other forest experts wonder how the trees will cope with far less energy from
photosynthesis, given that it will be years before they grow as many needles as they had before
the fire.“They’re alive, but I would be a little concerned for them in the future.”
28.What’s special about this big fire for coastal redwood forests in 2020?
A.It burnt the top of the trees. B.It was very close to the last fire.
C.It resisted burning effectively. D.It caused relatively minor damage.
29.Why did redwoods survive in the big fire?
A.Sugars protected their barks.
B.Energy reserves promoted the growth of buds.
C.They got used to hot climate.
D.They took in much carbon to resist fire.
30.What does the underlined word “infernos” in the third paragraph mean?
A.Unpredictable disasters. B.Changeable climate.
C.Terrible environment. D.Uncontrollable fires.
31.Why does Peltier worry about the survival of redwoods?
A.Their tissues can’t be repaired.
B.They can’t save energy anymore.
C.Their energy saved is not sufficient.
D.They grow too slowly.

The first-ever fine for space junk was issued in early October in a case of off-planet
environmental enforcement(执法).The television company,Dish Network,was hit with a
$125,000 fine by the United States government for failing to remove a satellite in orbit that would
5
have risked a collision(撞击)with other space equipment,a safety concern that will only grow
with time as off-planet activities increase.
According to NASA,debris(碎片)orbiting in space can travel up to 15 kilometres per
second, which is nearly 10 times faster than the velocity(速度)of a bullet.A huge amount of
damage can be caused by something just a few centimetres in size, meaning that every effort must
be taken to keep space as clear as possible.Collisions that take place in space have an effect back
on Earth. Damaged satellites impact our ability to use the Internet and navigation( 导 航 ),
leaving increasingly global critical infrastructure in an unstable state.
One solution for this may be to send autonomous space vehicles into orbit, which can then
catch and effectively de-orbit space junk.By utilizing tools such as robotic arms,or nets, this
approach will require very precise track and fine cooperation in order to be successful. Such
measures are yet to catch up with the increase in space activity and pollution currently
occurring. Therefore, fines and regulatory enforcement may presently be the only realistic
method to hold organizations accountable.
The Dish Network satellite, fined $125, 000 by the Federal Communications
Commission, failed to de-orbit as a lack of fuel stopped the satellite from fully decommissioning
(退役)a safe distance from Earth,falling short by around 75 miles(120 kilometres).It is
hoped that significant fines like these will serve as a warning for companies, forcing them to make
sure the safe decommissioning of their space operations.
32.Why was Dish Network fined?
A.It left space junk in orbit.
B.It increased off-planet activities.
C.It made collisions among space equipment.
D.It sent too much space equipment to space.
33.Why is it necessary to keep space clean?
A.Space junk may turn into bullets.
B.Debris fragments are too tiny to track.
C.Debris may cause great damage in space.
D.A bad space environment will destroy the Earth.
34.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The harm of space junk. B.Ways to remove space junk.
C.Types of autonomous space vehicles. D.Approaches to stopping satellites.
35.What’s the author’ attitude towards the fines?
A.Unconcerned. B.Doubtful.
C.Negative. D.Approving.

Brit works full time as a fourth-grade teacher at Kula Elementary School. It was there that
she met Seth Snyder, a student who had flown under the radar with previous teachers. Every
year,Brit is given a nine-month window in which to connect with a group of new students. And
with each batch of new students, she hopes to have a positive impact on their lives. But Seth was
a tough cookie to crack. For the first few months of the school year, she struggled to connect
with her student, who was shy but nevertheless a pleasure to have in the classroom.
One day,Brit showed her students a clip of skateboarders going all out at Tony Hawk’s ramp
in California. Brit glanced over and watched Seth’s face light up; she found their
connection. She went one step further to connect with Seth by inviting him to join her at the skate
park after school one day. Instead of excitement, Seth shut down. He politely declined his
teacher’s offer and withdrew once more.In spite of that,Brit wouldn’t give up so easily. She
asked again a few weeks later, the day Seth and his fellow students were cut loose for spring
break.
“What are you going to do?” she asked.“Are you going to skate?”
9
“NO,” he mumbled,almost embarrassed.“I don’t have a skateboard.”
Brit’s heart sank into her stomach.Kula Elementary comprises mostly underprivileged(缺
少机遇的)students who come from low-income families.Teachers like Brit have to tread(行
事 ) carefully when it comes to even the smallest conversations or assignments, because a
question as innocent as “What are your plans for spring break?” can be hurtful, sometimes
embarrassing, for students who have so little.
Brit said to the reporter,“If your parents are working three jobs to be able to pay rent,of
course they’re not going to have time to take you to skate park or,you know, take you surfing,
or let alone buy you that $400 surfboard or $200 skateboard.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Brit shared the story with her best friend,Zach,a professional skateboarder.___________
