Laguna Beach Festival of Arts

Festival Store

Plenty of people attend Laguna Beach Festival of Arts just to admire the works of art. However, for serious art

buyers, attending early in the season means a lot, since excellent pieces often sell early. Weekdays are less busy,

but there are fewer artists present. They often meet crowds in the evening that show up for the Pageant (盛会) of

the Masters. Some artists may negotiate prices at the end of the season. If you just want souvenirs of your visit, a

variety of products are available in the festival Store.

Fun Activities

Part of the fun of the festival comes from the activities that go on during the event. Tours and art workshops

are available every day. Weekends are full of live music and special events. To get best value for the money you

spend during the week, Thursday is the day to go for art talks by participating artists and evening jazz.

Food & Drinks

Food and drinks are sold at the snack bar. Tivoli Terrace caf and restaurants are on site for more formal

dining. Picnics are welcome during art talks or music shows, and there are tables set up in the courtyard for you to

enjoy your homemade or take-away food. But alcohol is forbidden here. On Thursdays, central tables are reserved

for ticket holders.

Cost of the Tickets

Entrance admission: $60 per person (the Pageant of the Masters and live music shows included)

Joint pass: $120 per person (free of charge for all the performances)

Notes: Since there are many visitors on the weekends, the ticket office may be crowded. For faster service, call

toll-free number 24 hours a day.

I had just delivered a memorable speech that I had labored over for months, and I was about to learn how the

experts judged my performance. The audience leaned forward in their folding chairs. Silence fell across the room

and the drum rolled in my heart.

The contest organizer announced the third-place winner. The name was not mine. Then the second, and once

again it was not me. At last, the moment of truth came. Either I was about to be lost in the warmth of victory or

regretted the last several months’ preparation. While neither of these came to pass, my heart just sank.

Losing is a part of life, but it was an indescribable depression to drive 200-mile round trip, get up early on a

freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four competitors. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois

Senate(参议院) race, he said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who kicked his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too

bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.

I had spent hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial (两百周年

纪念) Speech Contest. As I read through several biographies, one idea stood out: Lincoln was handed many sound

defeats, but he never allowed them to permanently stop his spirit or ambition. I thought “failing successfully” was a

very appropriate topic, given the many letdowns Lincoln experienced, and so this became the title of my speech.

Never mind the lost prize money and praise -- I did gain a new perspective. Now, whenever I’m faced with a

failure, I remember what Lincoln said after his unsuccessful 1854 Senate race, “The path was worn and difficult.

My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself. ‘It’s a slip

and not a fall.’”

24. How did the author feel when waiting for the announcement of the result?

A. Thrilled. B. Nervous. C. Depressed. D. Relieved.

25. Why did the author mention Lincoln’s failures in Senate race?

A. To show Lincoln’s determination to win Senate race.

B. To present his research findings of Lincoln’s biographies.

C. To indicate that he got inspiration from Lincoln’s failures.

D. To declare what they had in common in their experiences.

26. What’s the author’s attitude towards the lost prize money and praise?

A. Disappointed. B. Positive. C. Concerned. D. Anxious.

27. What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. A Successful Failure B. A Difficult Path.

C. An Unexpected Speech D. An Impressive Example

C

A study of 8 different experiments showed that our brains tend to prefer addition rather than subtraction when

it comes to finding solutions—in many cases, it seems we just don’t consider the strategy of taking something away

at all.

The researchers found that this preference for adding was noticeable in three situations in particular: when

people were under higher cognitive (认知的) load, when there was less time to consider the other options, and

when volunteers didn’t get a specific reminder that subtracting was an option. In one of the experiments,

participants were asked to improve a Lego structure so that it was able to take more weight. Half the volunteers

were reminded that they could take away bricks as well as add them, and half weren’t. In the group that got the

reminder, 61 percent solved the problem by taking away a brick—which was a much faster and more efficient way

of making the structure stable. In the group that didn’t get the reminder, only 41 percent went for the removing

bricks approach.

“Additive ideas come to mind quickly and easily, but subtractive ideas require more cognitive effort,” says

psychologist Benjamin Converse, from the University of Virginia. “Because people are often moving fast and

working with the first ideas that come to mind, they end up accepting additive solutions without considering

subtraction at all.”

The researchers have a few ideas about what might be going on. Our brains might find additive changes easier

to process perhaps, or we might be associating adding with ideas of something that’s bigger and therefore better in

our subconscious. There might also be associations in our minds with the current status being something that needs

to be maintained as much as possible—and taking something away is arguably more destructive to the current

status than adding something new.

The researchers say their work is important in a much broader sense: for institutions looking to streamline(简

化), for example, and even for the human race looking for ways to better manage the planet’s resources.

28. What does the underlined word “subtraction” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A. Refusal. B. Moderation. C. Removal. D. Solution.

29. In which situation do people prefer adding?

A. When they are hurried to decide. B. When they lack cognitive ability.

C. When they are specially reminded. D. When they are under high pressure.

30. What were participants required to do in the experiment?

A. Re-shape Lego bricks. B. Stabilize the Lego structure.

C. Move the Lego structure. D. Take Lego bricks away.

31. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?

A. The ways to make additive changes. B. The effects of taking something away.

C. The reasons for brains preferring addition. D. The importance of maintaining current status.

D

When I stepped into an innovative Park Library in Singapore, I saw the future. The plain building had a nice

selection of books and a cafe where readers could enjoy coffee while gazing at the leaves outside. It was

specifically designed without any latest technology.

“What’s so innovative about that?” a librarian in Toronto asked when I showed her pictures. Innovation to her

meant digital technology, like 3D printers. “Why couldn’t they both be innovative?” I asked.

We are constantly told that innovation is the most important force in our economy, without which we would

be left behind. But that fear of missing out has led us to fall into the false trappings of innovation over truly

innovative ideas that may be simpler and more effective. This mindset implies that if you just buy the new thing,

you have innovated! Each year, businesses and individuals run around like broken toy robots, trying to figure out

their strategy for the latest buzzword equipment.

At best, this is a waste of resources. Devices are bought, used and abandoned, as the technology’s capabilities

fall short of its promise. But at its worst, this approach can truly cause damage. Schools cut field trips to purchase

tablets with few proven benefits. Companies that applied AI into hiring have actually strengthened gender and

racial prejudices.

True innovation isn’t just some magic devices. It is a continuing process of reflection and reassessment, which

often means adopting “old” ideas and tools in a new context, or even returning to methods that worked in the past.

Adjusted properly, these rearview (后视的) innovations have proved as transformative as novel technologies.

Look no farther than the streets of New York, which have been redesigned recently to accommodate cyclists

with car-free zones. The idea isn’t new. It was created half a century ago, with the aim of bringing cities back to

their residents. And while e-reader sales have been exploding, Penguin just announced it would publish tiny printed

books, an ideal solution for a market demanding both convenience and physicality.

32. Which of the following best describes the Park Library in Singapore?

A. Dull but convenient. B. Simple but refreshing.

C. Old-fashioned but cozy. D. Unexceptional but spacious.

33. What can we learn about innovation from Paragraph 3?

A. Its true meaning is to buy new things. B. It is vital for the growth of economy.

C. It shouldn’t involve simple and effective ideas.D. Its true meaning has been misread by the public.

34. Which statement will the author probably agree with?

A. Magic devices encourage innovation. B. Innovation should be human-centered.

C. The power of technology is undervalued. D. Wasting resources are a must for innovation.

35. What is the writing purpose of the text?

A. To introduce some innovative devices.

B. To demonstrate that future lies in returning to the past.

C. To convince people of the true meaning of innovation.

D. To highlight the important role innovation plays in economy.

第二节(共5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5分)

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Self-esteem is the ruling view you have of yourself. This includes your beliefs about your inner qualities and

how you think others see you. 36 Someone can develop low self-esteem even when they are highly functional

and greatly skilled. Understanding this mysterious emotional currency might be the key to unlocking your own self-

worth.

People with healthy self-esteem don’t need to boast about themselves to others. People with low self-esteem

may tell you how much everyone loves them, what a great job they do at work, and how amazing they are at pretty

everything under the sun even though they really wonder if it’s true. People may see them as obnoxious or “full of

themselves”. 37 They are not shy about sharing ideas, including constructive criticisms of others. They also

take care of themselves without second-guessing or apologizing. They are the people who we say seem “sure of

themselves”.

If you’re starting to think you may have low self-esteem, you can work on the way you talk to yourself. When

you turn off negative self-talk, you can open the floor to positive reinforcements and access the courage to show

different sides of yourself. It isn’t going to feel good at first, though. Keep going until it becomes less and less and

maybe even a few awkward laughs in the mirror may help. 38

However, in serious cases of low or even non-existent self-esteem, you may want to call in a professional or a

specialist. Good mental health is important, and professionals doing psychotherapy do not pass judgement or give

corrections. 39 It is the best way to get at the roots of your real self-esteem problems.

40 It will take some work but your entire life--from your relationships to your body image to your

work habits --will be touched with the kind of power that only comes from someone believing in themselves. This

is the hardest part, and the greatest leap. With some changes and support, you can improve your self-esteem and see

how everything else changes as a result.

A. Self-esteem is not always rooted in reality, though.

B. You have the power to shape a new self-perception

C. This encourages you to speak openly without worry.

D. The real test of character is whether they can learn from their mistakes

E. Self-esteem refers to a person’s overall sense of his or her value or worth.

F. People with a healthy level of self-esteem present themselves with a casual confidence.

G. With some practice and persistence, you will win this internal struggle to see your self-worth.

第二节(满分 25 分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Rafael is my parents' friend who owns a bakery with the yummiest treats imaginable. He happened to stop by

when my friends Mareya and Daniel, my little sister Indi and I were drawing with chalk in front of my house. He

said our drawings were cool, trying not to step on them as he walked toward the door to find my dad. We expressed

our thanks and continued to draw.

A little while later, when he came back out with my dad, Rafael said he had been thinking about our wonderful

drawings, and that he’d really love our help. He was going to sell cookies, and the profits would go to an

organization that worked to save the rainforests. When asked if he wanted us to help taste the cookies, Rafael

laughed and said, “Of course.” But he said he also needed some artwork for the bags. He wondered if we would be

up for making some sketches (草图) on paper that he could consider for the label. We said yes right away. I mean,

who wouldn’t want to help the rainforests and sample some of Rafael’s delicious cookies? Rafael had to leave for a

meeting but promised to be back by four o’clock. “Don’t worry about making the pictures perfect,” he said as he

left. “Just have fun drawing.”

After we read a little bit about the rainforests, my mom helped get us set up with art supplies and background

music. And away we drew! Finally, about five minutes before four o’clock, we decided to stop and look at one

another’s work. To our great surprise, Daniel made an incredible drawing. When asked why he never told us that he

could draw like that, Daniel just smiled. He said he was glad we liked it and that he thought all of ours were really

awesome too.

注意:续写词数应为 150 左右。

Paragraph 1:

I liked my drawing, but after comparing it with Daniel’s masterpiece, I felt like the worst ever artist.

Dear Chris,

I have heard that you want to save money secretly to buy a phone for gaming. I think it’s not a good idea. It’s

important to prioritize your needs and make wise decisions. Spending all your money on gaming may not be

beneficial in the long run.

Instead, I suggest considering other options. You could save money for something that can contribute to your

personal development, such as educational materials or a hobby that can provide valuable skills. It’s also important

to find a balance between leisure activities and your responsibilities. I encourage you to explore different forms of

entertainment that don’t rely solely on technology. Engaging in outdoor activities, sports, or joining clubs can

provide enjoyment and help you develop new skills. It’s also a great way to expand your social circle.

I think if you can be a little bit smarter now, you will have a brighter future. Good luck.

Yours

Li Hua

Paragraph 1:

I liked my drawing, but after comparing it with Daniel's masterpiece, I felt like the worst ever artist. I tried to

tell myself that it was just for fun and that it didn’t matter how good or bad my drawing was, but I couldn’t shake

off the feeling of disappointment. Just then, Rafael walked in and noticed my downcast expression. He asked if

everything was alright and I told him how I felt. Rafael smiled and asked, “Do you want to know the secret of my

yummy cookies?” “What’s the secret?” I asked, expecting the answer. “It’s the fun and joy in the baking process.

You know, the most important thing about drawing, likewise, is not how perfect it looks, but how it makes you feel.

Does your drawing make you happy? If it does, then it’s a masterpiece.”

Paragraph 2:

When I looked closely at everyone’s art, I could understand what Rafael meant. Even though some of the

drawings were not technically perfect, they all had a special quality that made them unique and beautiful in their

own way. Mareya’s and Indi’s were bold and colorful, while mine was delicate and intricate. We all happily

engaged in drawing and each drawing represented our own observation and imagination. I think Rafael’s words

really captured the essence of what art is all about. It’s not about conforming to a certain set of rules or standards,

but rather about expressing oneself in a way that brings joy and meaning to the drawer and those who view the
