Which fruit personality are you?
In the workplace, we have to be able to deal with people who aren't like
us. No one will change for you, so you just have to respect their differences.
When identifying personality types, I like to talk in terms of fruit. Nobody is
just one fruit, but we all have a preference. And we tend to emphasize our top
two, especially under pressure. Here are some fruit personalities and how best
to deal with them.

I arrived home from work, my mind racing. I was scheduled to perform an experiment using a price y piece of
equipment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about the experiment which was on the top of my agenda, and
I amazingly longed to shut off my anxious thoughts. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, stretched
myself on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost instantly, my mind left behind the details of experimental design
and stepped into a land of monsters, magic dust, and man- like bears comprising a wonderful world distinct from
my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.
Growing up, I was virtually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest Harry
Potter book, while my copy sat collecting dust on a shelf. Instead, I would choose to read through the reference
books related to my disciplines for better grades. After I started graduate school, extracurricular reading didn't
appeal to me at all but I spent most of my time on campus digesting research papers and textbooks and my mind
couldn't handle processing fact- filled nonfiction books at home, too. So I knew that I needed to find a way to
enjoy reading again.
To help me stick with it, I made a New Year’s resolution: I would read two fiction books per month for the
entire year. The result was an almost instant app recitation of fiction, along with many unexpected results
including ones that have benefited my schoolwork.
What surprised me the most was how much I learned. Some of the best books I read were historical fictional
stories happening in a realistic historical setting. I learned about life in different countries, as well as struggles
people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and
understanding, with an unexpected benefit: I've started to think more deeply about the diversity of issues in the
scientific com- munity and could serve it, heart and soul.
24. What did the author do to wipe out the anxiety?
A. He drowned it in chocolate.
B. He conducted an experiment.
C. He escaped into a fantasy world.
D. He slept on the sofa leisurely.
25. What does the author mean by the underlined part in paragraph 2?
A. Reading novels was a waste of time.
B. Reading a good book was time well spent.
C. He was too busy to take good care of his books.
D. The Harry Potter book wasn't as good as expected.
26. How did the New Year 's resolution benefit the author?
A. More sympathy went out to him.
B. He gained new insight into his academic discipline.
C. He learned much about religious diversity.
D. His moral values were strengthened.
27. What's the best title of the text?
A. Reading: A Lifelong Hobby B. The Power of Research Papers
C. The Benefits of History Reading D. Novels: Love at Second Sight
C
Why do we find ugly animals so appealing? And what makes odd- looking creatures so cute?
Evolution plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Konrad Lorenz, human attraction to childish features,
such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for
their offspring, guaranteeing the survival of their species. Odd- looking animals such as blobfish, pugs, aye- ayes
and bulldogs all share these infantile qualities that trigger an affectionate response among humans and an natural
instinct (本能) to nurture and protect. And these infantile characteristics increase a person's protective behavior,
attention and willingness to care for the individual and reduce the likelihood of aggression towards an infant, says
Marta Borgi, a researcher.
Ugly animals often have other value--- some, like the blobfish or the naked mole rat, live in extreme
environments that they have adapted to in remarkable ways. Scientists are keen to study these animals to
understand whether their biology might provide fresh insights that could lead to treatments for human health
conditions such as cancer, heart disease and other deadly diseases.
There are other culture- led factors that also drive our obsession (痴迷) with ugly- cute animals.“ The ugly-
cute thing is very fashionable,” says Rowena Packer, a lecturer of ani- mal behavior. This is partly driven by social
media, with many celebrities and influencers showing off pet pugs and French bulldogs on Instagram, she says.
But there are some serious welfare concerns around this trend. Vets are urging people not to choose a flat-
faced dog breed(品种), because they suffer from serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs which have
been selectively bred experience breathing difficulties, repeated skin infections and eye diseases. So while
ridiculous features such as bulging ( 隆 起 的 ) eyes and wrinkly faces may make us smile, we might want to
reconsider our obsession with“ ugly- cute” pets.
28. Why do people like ugly animals according to Konrad Lorenz?
A. People appreciate their efforts to survive.
B. People are attracted by their baby- like looks.
C. People appreciate their super adaptability.
D. People are fond of their fast response speed.
29. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. What media are changing people.
B. Whether social media is worth believing.
C. How public practices influence people.
D. Why celebrities show off their pet animals.
30. What's the author's attitude towards people's love for ugly animals?
A. Cautious. B. Supportive.
C. Indifferent. D. Opposed.
31. How does the author mainly answer the questions raised in paragraph l?
A. By referring to authoritative evolutionary theory.
B. By showing some examples of keeping pets.
C. By observing people's behavior towards animals.
D. By quoting different researchers' findings.
D
When we encounter a troublesome problem, we often gather a group to brainstorm. However, substantial
evidence has shown that when we generate ideas together, we fail to maximize collective intelligence.
To unearth the hidden potential in teams, we' re better off shifting to a process called“ brainwriting”. You
start by asking group members to write down what is going on in their brains separately. Next, you pool them and
share them among the group without telling the authors. Then, each member evaluates them on his or her own,
only after which do the team members come together to select and improve the most promising options. By
developing and assessing ideas individually before choosing and expanding on them, the team can sur- face and
advance possibilities that might not get attention otherwise.
An example of great brainwriting was in 2010 when 33 miners were trapped under- ground in Chile. Given
the urgency of the situation, the rescue team didn’t hold brainstorming sessions. Rather, they established a global
brainwriting system to generate individual ideas. A 24- year- old engineer came up with a tiny plastic telephone.
This specialized tool ended up becoming the only means of communicating with the miners, making it possible to
save them.
Research by organizational behavior scholar Anita Woolley and her colleagues helps to explain why this
method works. They find that the key to collective intelligence is balanced participation. In brainstorming
meetings, it's too easy for participation to become one- sided in favor of the loudest voices. The brainwriting
process ensures that all ideas are brought to the table and all voices are brought into conversation. The goal isn't to
be the smartest per- son in the room. It's to make the room smarter.
Collective intelligence begins with individual creativity, but it doesn't end there. Individuals produce a
greater volume and variety of novel ideas when they work alone. That means they not only come up with more
brilliant ideas than groups but also more terrible ideas. Therefore, it takes collective judgment to find the signal in
the noise
and bring out the best ideas.
32. What is special about brainwriting compared with brainstorming?
A. It highlights independent work. B. It encourages group cooperation.
C. It prioritizes quality over quantity. D. It prefers writing to oral exchanges.
33. Why does the author mention the Chile mining accident in paragraph 3?
A. To introduce a tool developed during brainwriting.
B. To praise a young man with brainwriting technique.
C. To explain the role of brainwriting in communication.
D. To illustrate a successful application of brainwriting.
34. How does brainwriting promote collective intelligence according to paragraph 4?
A. By blocking the loudest voices. B. By improving individual wisdom.
C. By allowing equal involvement. D. By generating more creative ideas.
35. Which step of brainwriting does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A. Individual writing. B. Joint discussion.
C. Personal evaluation. D. Group sharing.
第二节 七选五 (共 5 小题; 每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Tired of traditional chlorinated(含氯的) pools? Consider a salt water pool, a popular trend in recent years.
A salt water pool is a type of swimming pool that uses a salt chlorine generator to pro- duce its own supply of
chlorine. This means instead of manually adding harsh(刺激性的) chemicals to a pool, the generator changes salt
into chlorine and releases it into the water as needed. 36 They still contain levels of chlorine and other minerals,
but the amount is significantly low.
What sets salt water pools apart from their traditional counterparts? With traditional chlorine pools, owners
must monitor and adjust chemical levels regularly to maintain proper balance--- too much or too little can cause
major problems for swimmers. 37 With a salt water system set up in the pool, one doesn't have to spend as much
time testing and adjusting chemical levels. The generator automatically produces enough chlorine based on the
pool's size. 38
Have you ever been in a traditional chlorine pool and come out with red, irritated(刺痒的) skin or burning
eyes? 39 Salt water pools, however, use a saltwater chlorination system that produces natural chlorine to treat the
water, which is kinder to the skin and eyes. Plus, minerals like magnesium and potassium in salt water pools can
benefit the skin.
40 Salt water pools require fewer chemical additions and result in lower chlorine by- product emissions.
Since there's no need for chemical storage, there's less risk of accidents or spills.
A. It's like having an assistant manage the affairs while you just enjoy yourself!
B. So one doesn't have to worry about the strong smell of chlorine.
C. You'll leave a salt water pool feeling refreshed.
D. It's no secret that chlorine can be harsh on the body.
E. Switching to salt water pools is also eco- friendly.
F. However, salt water pools are not completely chemical- free.
G. This can be quite exhausting and time- consuming.

Canadian geese have a good 42 for their politeness. They always bow down to you whenever you walk by.
However, I have recently found that they can sometimes be 43 to their peers, especially on occasions when they
quarrel for food—— yes, these 44 gentle- men do quarrel, just for something to eat.
Yesterday I witnessed two Canadian Geese arguing 45 for a clump( 草丛 ) of beautiful fresh grass. The
clump was 46 right in the middle of them, while the two were shouting noisily, stretching their necks as long as

couldn’t help 48 my morning walk, standing still to watch these“ gentlemen” quarreling. Interestingly, after a
short while, a truck roared past their feast, disturbing their 49 conversation. The two geese were equally 50 by
the massive“ monster”, thus giving up their conversation.
Would they start quarreling again? I stood still, 51 the ridiculous question and waited. Beyond my
expectation, right after the truck's passing by, the two geese immediately lost their 52 for quarreling as if they had
forgotten all about what had happened. Even the two turned around and left the 53 in opposite directions as if
nothing had
happened. They left only me there, imagining what might have happened without the 54 .
They got along harmoniously again. Sometimes it's not that bad to be 55 .

An Unforgettable Activity in High School
第二节 (满分 25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The couple, Ella and Ken, lived in a fancy countryside house every summer together with their boys Jim and
Dick, aged 7 and 11.
The two kids got on well with each other, unlike some other brothers who would often fight over small
things. They shared everything happening in their school and exchanged their favourite toys and books. Except for
one
thing, cleaning! One sunny morning, Ella called out to her children,“ Jim and Dick, it’s time to clean your
room!” The kids sighed deeply. Cleaning their room was always the last thing they wanted to do.
Unhappy, Jim and Dick dragged their feet into their messy room. Toys were thrown randomly here and there
on the floor, clothes were piled up on chairs, and books were haphazardly(随意的) piled on the shelves. It was a
total mess!
Mom came in,“ Oh, God! How come? We need to work together to clean it up.” Jim and Dick exchanged
looks, clearly not delighted with the task at hand. There were a few arguments between them, especially when it
came to cleaning their room.
Mom, realizing their unwillingness, said to the kids, “A clean room not only looks nice but also helps us
arrange our life in an orderly way. It's important to take care of our belongings and keep our surroundings clean. ”
The boys didn’t respond, seemingly thinking about something.
Their father happened to hear the conversation and decided to give them a hand. He came up with a good
idea. He said, “I know that cleaning can be dull, but what if we change it into a fun contest? The winner, who can
find the most interesting item hidden in this messy room, will decide what we have for dessert tonight!”
Their faces lighting up with excitement, they accepted their father's suggestion.

An Unforgettable Activity in High School
My high school has witnessed many colorful activities in the past 3 years, among which the coming-of-age
ceremony is especially unforgettable.
Present at the ceremony were all we students from Grade 3, along with our parents and teachers. It kicked off
with an inspiring speech delivered by our president, which conveyed congratulations and anticipations about our
future. Then came a series of activities, ranging from expressing gratitude to our parents and teachers to making a
promise of being responsible for the adulthood. The highlight was when we walked through the coming-of-age
gate.
The ceremony will be rooted in my mind as a reminder that I should shoulder my responsibility as an adult.

One possible version:
Curious about what they would find, they took immediate action individually. To their surprise, Jim
discovered his favorite toy car that he had been searching for weeks while Dick found a missing colorful pencil
buried under a pile of papers. The boys couldn’t contain their excitement as they continued their search. As they
explored the room, they came across forgotten treasures, like a model plane, candies and comic books. Each
discovery brought laughter and pleasure, making the cleaning more enjoyable than they had ever expected.
The room became less messy gradually. Ken saw his boys working together, helping each other find hidden
items, and laughing throughout the exploration. After what seemed like hours of searching and cleaning, the boys
finally declared their search complete. The room was now tidy, and their treasures were proudly displayed. Mom
entered the room, amazed at the changes. Considering their excellent performance, Mom let the boys choose their
favorite dessert for the night together. Happily tasting their treats, they enjoyed the victory that came from working
together and turning a boring task into a memorable exploration.
