Since my son went to college in Chicago, I made quarterly trips there for the next three years. My friend
George was a cook there and he knew many outstanding restaurants. One of them was a Chinese restaurant called
The Bird. It was owned and operated by Chef Benny Moy who happened to be an old friend of George's.
The dishes Benny prepared were unique, and everything was in his mind when he was cooking. Just by
changing, adding or removing an ingredient or two, he could come up with an entirely new dish.
As a fan of Chinese food, I was always attracted by its recipes. After a year went by, I finally gathered the
courage to ask Benny if I could spend a week learning cooking in his restaurant kitchen. To my joy, he agreed
readily.
I was very nervous the first day I showed up. But I didn't have to wait long to find out how I would start. Put
on this jacket, go over to the stove and clean the two works(锅) there, he said. I was excited. What a beginning! I
was allowed to clean the master's woks.
Then things just seemed to fall into place. Benny was very concentrated when he was doing preparing work or
cooking. I would just follow him around, trying very hard not to get in his way. Besides, I would talk into my hand-
held recorder to document everything he did; in effect, I had all his recipes. He had a teaching style that was all his
own. And I just watched and learned everything he did by heart.
At the end of the week, when my time in the kitchen was over, I came away feeling that I have had the most
exciting, unusual, and unique cooking experiences. Plus, now I know how to cook Benny's most-known dish: Moo
shu pork.
24. What are Benny's dishes like?
A. Nutriti ous and salty. B. Conventional and tasty.
C. Original and spicy. D. Special and distinctive.
25. What do we know about Benny?
A. He used to live in Chicago.
B. He was reluctant to clean works.
C. He ran a Chinese food restaurant.
D. He liked adding ingredients to dishes.
26. Which is closest in meaning to fall into place in paragraph 5?
A. Work out smoothly. B. Be in chaos.
C. Take a downturn. D. Get worse gradually.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Creating Innovative Dishes
B. Observing Cooking Procedures
C. Appreciating Favorite Recipes
D. Learning Chinese Cuisine

Mogao Grottoes is located at the western end of the Hexi Corridor along the ancient Silk Road in Dunhuang,
China. Until now, most mural paintings at Mogao Grottoes have been dated by directly referring to the mural texts
or historical documents. However, some are still left with the creation era(年 代 ) uncertain due to the lack of
reference materials or the disagreement of art experts.
The drawing style of mural paintings was changing throughout history and can be learned and quantified (量
化) through painting data. A new dating method has been developed by encoding(编码) the drawing styles using
visual codes learned through deep learning. This new method successfully discovered the creation era of six mural
paintings at Mogao Grottoes.
With the help of experts from Dunhuang Academy, seven mural paintings from two grottoes( No. 205 and No.
206) were chosen as subjects for this dating research. To figure out the creation era of these paintings, Qin Zou, a
researcher from Wuhan University, collected 3,860 mural paintings from 194 different grottoes with confirmed
creation-era labels. To find the visual codes that can identify the era in these paintings, the authors built a deep
convolution al neural network(卷积神经网络) and classified these painting images into the right eras. Based on the
classification model, a dating method was built and applied to date the seven paintings.
Six of the new dating results were approved by experts from Dunhuang Academy. These dating results are
correct and the method is great, said Mr. Hui-Min Wang, a distinguished expert from the Archaeological Institute
of Dunhua ng Academy.
To the best of our knowledge, wrote the researchers, this work represents the first account of a scientific
and quantitative manner to support the era prediction and reduce the uncertainties in dating ancient paintings by
using deep learning.
28. What might be a reason for some murals remaining undated?
A. Variety of the drawing styles.
B. Errors of historical literature.
C. Shortage of reference materials.
D. Disagreement of historical documents.
29. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Why the drawing style is always changing.
B. What a new dating method looks like.
C. How painting data are learned and quantified.
D. Whether a dating approach should be applied.
30. Why does the author mention the example of Cave No. 205 and No. 206?
A. To compare two different drawing styles.
B. To present the application of visual codes.
C. To explain the creation of the classification model.
D. To analyze the main features of the paintings.
31. What do the researchers think of the new method?
A. It is a breakthrough.
B. It classifies drawing styles.
C. It brings many uncertainties.
D. It makes accurate predictions.

A new study in the journal Frontiers in Robotics and AI found that people carrying out tasks with robots will
make less effort when they think the robot will perform skillfully, a psychological theory known as social loafing.
Social loafing is the social phenomenon that individuals don't pull their weight when working as part of a team
or with well-respected colleagues, relying on others to cover for them. It can sometimes explain why groups are
often less productive than individuals working on a task alone.
The study by researchers at the Technical University of Berlin was designed to test whether this unconscious
behavior was also true with robots, and to what extent.
According to the research article, participants were given the task of spotting industrial defects on circuit
boards. One group of participants worked on the task alone, while the other group worked with a robot partner,
receiving boards that had already been inspected by the robot. The robot was quite reliable and marked defects on
the boards before handing them over to the human. However, it missed 5 defects. Once the human subjects were
finished with inspecting the boards, they also had to self-rate their efforts, indicating their level of responsibility for
the task and their own performance.
When the researchers focused on the error rates of the participants, they found that those working with the
robot actually spotted fewer defects during the task. As the researchers noted, this was likely due to the looking-
but-not-seeing effect. This occurs when people engaged in a task come to believe they can rely on someone or
something else and start to pay less attention to the task themselves. Subconsciously, the participants decided that
robot wasn't going to miss any defects, so they didn't have to do as much.
What can be taken from the conclusion? There can be safety implications for future robot-human interactions
if humans come to believe the robots do the job so well that they won't have to follow up. There is less motivation
for humans to interfere, especially when it comes to routine and repetitive tasks like those in manufacturing.
32. When does the phenomenon social loafing most likely occur according to the research?
A. Discussing with classmates. B. Working with experts.
C. Handling tasks alone. D. Explaining to psychologists.
33. Why was the research conducted?
A. To narrow the distance between colleagues.
B. To confirm the role that robots play at work.
C. To investigate the effect of team work with robots.
D. To compare productivity between humans and robots.
34. Which aspect of the research is presented in paragraph 4?
A. Its process. B. Its conclusion.
C. Its outlook. D. Its purpose.
35. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. Humans think robots are the most reliable workmates.
B. Robots won't miss any defects when inspecting circuit boards.
C. The looking-but-not-seeing effect is beneficial for manufacturing.
D. Humans must do their parts carefully even when working with robots.

Critical thinking means making reasoned judgments that are logical and well-thought-out. To think critically,
you don't simply accept all argument s and conclusions you are exposed to. 36 Here are several tips to
develop your critical thinking skills.
Question ideas and assumptions. 37 They constantly question ideas and assumptions rather than
accepting them at face value. They will always seek to determine whether the ideas, arguments and findings
represent the entire picture and are open to finding why they do not. It is about being an active learner rather than a
passive receiver of information.
38 When analyzing a work procedure or process, you can creatively come up with ways to make it
faster and more efficient. It is a skill that can be strengthened over time. To discover certain patterns of information
and make abstract connections between seemingly unrelated data will improve your critical thinking. This is
valuable no matter what career you take up.
Adjust your perspective. Previous education and life experiences leave their marks on a person's ability to
objectively evaluate certain situations. By acknowledging these biases, you can improve your critical thinking and
overall decision process. 39 Putting yourself in other people's shoes will help you imagine their
motivations, ambitions, and confusions.
Practice reflection. Baking time for reflection into your day, particularly after an emotional situation is
resolved or a big project is completed. Consider: What was the context? What was I thinking and feeling in the
moment? What were other people thinking and feeling in the moment? What could I have done differently knowing
what I know now? 40 They would tell you how you handled something and what they would have done
differently.
A. Think creatively.
B. Work effectively.
C. Empathy can also be of great help.
D. Critical thinkers definitely have the ability to reason.
E. It can be helpful, too, to ask for feedback from someone you trust or admire.
F. Besides, you can build good relationships that will help you make a decision.
G. Instead, you keep an attitude involving questioning such arguments and conclusions.

When I was in middle school, I became blind. Suddenly thrown into a world of darkness, I was troubled by
frustration and self-pity. Depression consumed me and I was frightened to try anything challenging.
Imagine my surprise when my teacher asked me to enter a speaking contest. I rejected it out of hand, Among
so many students, why did she pick me? I was an average student, blind and plain-looking. Anyhow, she insisted
that I go for it. Her reply: Because I believe you can deliver a good speech. You are more capable than you
imagine! Encouraged by her words, I agreed to give it a shot.
I decided on a fictional mole(鼹 鼠 ) as my topic. It was a cute creature with poor eyesight, mostly living
underground, digging holes and helping get rid of pests. Not a brilliant idea, but unique; and undoubtedly a
relatable tale.
What did the mole think, as he fought his way in the darkness? Would he get scared? Have second thoughts?
Want to quit? It struck a chord immediately. I got exhausted from preparing the speech. I had doubts about my
choice. I wanted to escape from reality. But, like the blind mole, I kept it up. I doubled my efforts. I checked out
books from the school library. I referred to some great speeches. I turned to my father for guidance.
A week before the competition, I presented my speech to my teacher. She smiled, saying, Good. Now, polish
your writing and practice your delivery. I couldn't remember how many times I made adjustments to my writing.
Nor could I recall how I practiced it over and over again, with mixed feelings. Could my message get across to the
audience? How would they react? Tons of questions crowded into my mind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Jack,
Hope this letter finds you well. Concerning your idea of having students recite the English text for five
minutes, while I do appreciate your effort to improve our English speaking skills, I see potential issues. Varying
speaking abilities may cause anxiety and even reluctance. Additionally, in larger classes, time constraints may limit
participation.
I suggest a 1-minute sharing session for multiple students to discuss a part of the text, which encourages more
participation without overwhelming anyone.
Thank you for considering my ideas.
