planning and maximization of available resources, traveling as a college student may be easier
than you think.
Chengdu, China
If visiting a place with happy locals is a priority for you, there’s no better city to hit than
Chengdu. It is home to pandas and spicy things. Moreover, the city’s abundance of cultural and
historical sights, together with its laid-back lifestyle, make itself one of the most attractive and
livable large cities too. Past travelers have spent, on average,158 on meals and about a quarter
of that on local transportation for one day.
Con Dao Island, Vietnam
Tourism is picking up in Vietnam lately, where you can travel for about 100 per day if
you play your cards right. Con Dao Island Nation Park, a group of dramatic tiny islands off the
southern coast, is a great destination to see sea turtles and other wildlife while exploring the area
on foot. Its thick jungle will give you a good chance to uncover a paradise of your own.
Zakynthos Island, Greece
If you’re looking for an affordable European summer beach vacation, consider Zakynthos
Island. Food is cheap and mouthwatering. There are plenty of free things to do, although the
favorite is spending time on the beautiful beaches edged by electric blue water. There are
countless options for swimming in the appealing sea, along with charming villages and museums
to explore.
New Orleans, U. S.

I don’t think I can recall a time when I wasn’t aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing
up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to
Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet
anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were
fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral (珊瑚). They made such an impression on me.
When I learned that only one percent of Australia’s Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked.
Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs (暗礁) have more
marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world’s reefs are
considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it’s important for us to do everything to protect them. The
hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete ecosystem has led me to take action. I’ve become
involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in
the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean’s species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be part of
the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young
boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of
ocean species.
24. What can we learn about the author from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?
A. He seldom went sailing at the sea.
B. He forgot his experiences about the ocean.
C. He never went back to his hometown.
D. He had a wonderful impression of Halfmoon Bay.
25. What is Australian marine life like according to the second paragraph?
A. It is escaping from the Coral Sea gradually.
B. It depends on reefs for living greatly.
C. It may be faced with danger.
D. It is protected better than that in other oceans.
26. What is the aim of the Protect Our Coral Sea activity?
A. To contribute to a complete ecosystem.
B. To prevent more marine species being endangered.
C. To set up a large nature reserve for reefs.
D. To raise more teenagers’ environmental awareness.
27. Why do Angus and the author create a little video?
A. To ask more people to take action to protect the marine species.
B. To inspire more people to study the secret of the ocean.
C. To share their childhood experiences about the ocean.
D. To bring back to people their memory of ocean species.
C
While some critics claim that history curricula (课程) teach unnecessary content, others
argue that these curricula need to be more comprehensive. Despite ongoing debates about
content, one universal truth remains: strong history curricula are necessary for developing the
productive citizens of tomorrow.
The greatest academic value that history curricula provide is not the recall of important
dates and names. Rather, understanding the historical inquiry process is the most important
component. This process teaches students how to become critical thinkers and understand the
dynamic nature of the telling of history.
Through strong history curricula, students are shown both a variety of primary and
secondary sources and are taught to critique them. This is where the historical inquiry process
begins. Students not only begin to analyze and ask questions about the content, but they also
learn about the author’s credibility and potential bias ( 偏 见 ). Students are then able to
contextualize the information they learn and can think more critically about historical context
and those who tell it.
With this framework, students can then understand the causal relationship between human
nature, values, philosophy, actions, and their consequences. It teaches students to recognize
recurrent themes and lessons that are necessary to understand modern society. Most importantly,
it teaches students to develop a healthy skepticism (怀疑论) when presented with information
today because our actions are history in the making.
Forty years ago, renowned scholar James Fitzgerald argued that no education is complete
without the teaching of historical inquiry. He believed that the only way to move forward in life
is to understand what’s behind us.
Today, this principle still holds true. Students take both the factual knowledge and the
historical inquiry skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to real world circumstances.
Throughout their lives, students who are taught with strong history curricula will take the
lessons they learn from our predecessors and become involved, active, productive citizens who
want to create a history that tomorrow’s students will be proud to learn about.
28. What is the biggest academic significance of history learning?
A. Passing down Chinese culture. B. Grasping historical inquiry skills.
C. Making people more knowledgeable. D. Enriching people’s everyday life.
29. What does the underlined word “critique” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Combine. C. Comment. D. Remember.
30. Why is James Fitzgerald mentioned in the passage?
A. To stress the importance of history.
B. To point out the essence of education.
C. To indicate famous people learn from history.
D. To show history contributes to people’s achievements.
31. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. It Is the People that Create History
B. History Pushes the Wheel of the Times
C. History Curricula Are Gaining More Attention
D. History Curricula Shape Tomorrow’s Decision Makers

The release of GPT-4, the latest language model developed by OpenAI, has raised concerns
about its potential impact on the job market. In the finance industry, fears around AI disruption
are particularly severe, as many jobs involve the processing of data that could easily be done
by machines.
This has prompted questions about what it means for the CFA Institute, which offers
chartered financial analyst qualifications to humans who pay a considerable fee to take the
exams. If an AI algorithm (算法) can pass the CFA exam, it could threaten the CFA Institute's
revenue (收入) model and potentially affect several hundred thousand bank employees.
However, recent experiments have shown that GPT-4 is not yet capable of passing the CFA
exam. The simulation scored only 8 out of a possible 24 points, demonstrating that faking
logical thought is very different from fake reasoning through the application of arbitrary rules
and definitions. Humans still retain an upper hand in this area.
The CFA exam relies heavily on memorization and pattern matching, rather than
processing the meaning of each question. This has allowed humans to continue to excel at the
exam compared to machines that rely on algorithms and logical deductions (推理).
While the development of advanced AI may pose a threat to some industries, including
finance, it appears that in the case of CFA accreditation, humans still have the upper hand. For
now, those working in financial regulations and those responsible for setting exams in this field
can breathe a small sigh of relief knowing their jobs are safe– at least for a little while longer.
In conclusion, the release of GPT-4 has sparked concerns about its potential to disturb the
job market, especially in finance. However, experiments have demonstrated that AI still has
limitations, particularly in areas requiring fake reasoning through memorized answers. While
this news may reassure those in the finance industry, there is no denying that AI technology
continues to transform many aspects of work and life.
32. Why are there concerns about GPT-4’s impact on the job market in finance?
A. It is capable of passing the CFA exam and taking over jobs.
B. It could potentially replace humans in processing data.
C. The finance industry has been slow to adopt new technology.
D. Bank employees are actively protesting against AI adoption.
33. According to the passage, what skills do computers currently struggle with that humans
excel at in the CFA exam?
A. Logical reasoning and deduction. B. Understanding financial regulations.
C. Data processing and analysis. D. Memorizing and pattern matching.
34. How do recent experiments with GPT-4 affect the job market in finance?
A. They demonstrate that humans’ jobs are safe for the foreseeable future.
B. They suggest that banks will soon be replacing humans with AI.
C. They prove that AI has already surpassed humans in financial analysis.
D. They have no impact on the job market.
35. What is the probable potential impact of advanced AI development on financial regulations?
A. It could threaten the job security of regulators.
B. It could cause a decrease in the number of regulations.
C. It could increase the speed and efficiency of regulatory processes.
D. It could lead to increased instances of fraud and corruption.

How to Handle an Argument with Your Family Members
We’ve all been there. A relaxed evening with our family members. A lot of laughing. And
then, as if someone had sat on the TV remote and changed the channel, the mood shifts. No more
warmth. Suddenly there’s shouting, a ping-pong of accusations ( 指 责 ), deadly stares, and
hostility (敌意) streaming from eyes like red laser pointers. Having a conflict with your family
members is frustrating, and you may feel sad and depressed. 36 .
Do remember that as much as it might feel this way, you’re not in a court of law with your
family members. 37 . It is to restore kindness and connection. Think of it this way —if
somebody wins, both parties lose.
Do try to be an advocate of others’ feelings. 38 , try to stand in the shoes of your family
members. Try to understand their immature ways.
39 . This might frighten your family members, making them feel accused and in turn, act
defensively. Example: “I was on the phone with my sister and then suddenly you started acting
like crazy out of the blue.” Talk about the way you felt instead. Example: “I was on the phone with
my sister and then I suddenly felt scared when I saw you looking at me like I was in trouble.”
Don’t try to explain yourself. You often want to explain yourself when having conflicts with
your family members, but you don’t have time. You’re being cut off and attacked again.
40 . The more you talk, the less your family members seem to understand and the further away
you get from an agreement.
A. If you are looking for a new relationship
B. Don’t attempt to prove yourself in the face of your loved ones
C. The point of an argument isn’t to prove the others guilty or to win
D. Rather than going in circles about what you think and how you feel
E. Each accusation strikes deeper and deeper into your sense of justice
F. Don’t talk about what happened as though you’re simply stating the facts
G. Here are the do’s and don’ts when you are arguing with your family members

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field
below. “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk, the cow was in Mama’s daisy patch (雏菊
地).
I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over
her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk
was eating the flowers.
Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. “Why can’t you stay in the
field?” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.
Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, “When I
grew up, I’ll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I’ll never own a cow. Too much trouble.” In
truth, even at her tender age, Taylor showed promise as a little painter. It was moments like
these that fueled Taylor’s dreams of becoming an artist.
Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk’s collar, the family dog,
Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies
and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.
“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.
She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or
trampled (踩踏).
Mama came out of the house. “What’s going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her
garden.
“I forgot to lock the gate,” Taylor said. “I’m so sorry.”
“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson
today.”
Taylor’s heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to
make it up to her mother.

Possible Version 1
Prepared for the Future Career
To make full preparations for the future career, we first need to know what we want to be and
figure out the ways to achieve it.
As for me, I want to be a teacher when growing up. First of all, if I want to be a good teacher,
I need to get ready for my lessons before class and always listen carefully in class so that I can be
admitted into a key university. What's more, I am supposed to have adequate teaching experience
which can not only help me to sharpen my teaching skills but can help me to better understand my
students. Last but not least, a teacher's personality plays an important part in being a good teacher.
Therefore, I should be always patient and willing to help my students.
I think all above is of great help to me to be prepared for the future career.
Possible Version 2
Prepared for the Future Career
There are various careers, among which I dream of being an outstanding English teacher. As
for me, being an English teacher is a meaningful choice. Not only can I have a better understanding
of other cultures, but I am capable of spreading knowledge to students.
In order to realize my dream, I have made a specific plan. First and foremost,to be admitted
into a top university, I will study harder to have a good academic performance. Next, practising
English is essential. As the saying goes, “practice makes perfect.” Only in this way can I make
progress in persuing my dream . Lastly, I will take part in voluntary work, where I can teach kids
English and share English stories with them.
In a word, I will go to a great length to accomplish my dream. I hold the firm belief that with
my effort I can become a qualified English teacher in the near future.

One possible version
Paragraph 1
Suddenly, a painting on the wall caught Taylor’s eye. “That’s it,” she exclaimed, her eyes
twinkling with excitement, so excited as if she were floating in the ocean of happiness. Taylor raced
upstairs, grabbed her art supplies and got ready to paint. She sat down at her desk, looking out the
window at the remaining daisies below. As her brush moved smoothly across the papers, daisies
came alive. At the thought that this ideal way may work, Taylor’s face lit up with pleasure. During
the days before the fair, Taylor made one painting after another, hoping to give Mama a big surprise
which could make up for her mistake.
Paragraph 2
The morning of the fair, Taylor came downstairs to invite Mama to see the surprise. Hardly
had Mama opened the door when she was entirely amazed at the scene, utterly in disbelief at what
she was seeing. Daisy paintings were everywhere, bright and cheerful in the morning light. “Do you
think anyone will buy them?” Taylor asked. Stroking her hair affectionately, Mama wrapped her in a
hug and nodded, “Oh, yes, sweetie. I’m sure they will.” After loading the daisy bouquets and
paintings into the van, they headed for fair. No matter how much money the paintings valued,
Taylor’s warm heart and commitment were invaluable.
