Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse has just been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature for his
“innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable”.
The Swedish Academy credits Fosse as “one of the most widely performed playwrights in the world”, although the
64-year-old originally made his name as a novelist, beginning with Red, Black in 1983. He has since written many works of
prose and poetry. “His literary works, spanning a variety of genres, comprises about 40 plays and a wealth of novels, poetry
collections, essays, children’s books and translations,” said Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
Jon Fosse draws inspiration from his rural living environment and personal struggles, which have deeply influenced his
distinctive writing style. Growing up in a small coastal village, Fosse was immersed in the beauty of nature and the vastness
of the sea, which filled him with a sense of solitude and introspection(内省) that is reflected in his works. Fosse’s writing
discussed themes of loneliness, longing, and the search for meaning in life. Additionally, his battles with depression have
enabled him to explore the depths of human emotions and existential despair.
“He touches you so deeply when you read his works,” said Anders Olsson. “What is special about him is the closeness
in his writing. It touches your deepest feelings — anxieties, insecurities, questions of life and death, which are things that
every human being actually faces from the very beginning. In that sense I think he reaches very far and there is a sort of a
universal impact of everything that he writes — it has appeal to this basic humanity.”
Fosse is the first-ever laureate writing in Nynorsk(尼诺斯克语), one of the two official languages of Norwegian, but
only used by just 10% of the population. As the Guardian writes, “Many Nynorsk speakers see Fosse ‘as a kind of national
hero’ for his championing of the language.” Fosse’s recognition on a global stage promotes the visibility and importance of
Nynorsk as a written standard. It will attract more attention to Nynorsk literature, inspire and encourage Nynorsk speakers
to continue preserving and promoting their linguistic heritage.
24. What do we know about Jon Fosse from paragraph 2?
A. His most popular work is the play Red, Black.
B. He accomplished various genres of literature works.
C. Many famous plays are the inspiration for his writing.
D. His language skills earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature.
25. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Jon Fosse’s tough experiences. B. Jon Fosse’s motivation for writing.
C. The major themes of Jon Fosse’s works. D. The effect of life on Jon Fosse’s writing style.
26. What is special about Jon Fosse’s works according to Anders Olsson?
A. They explore the real meaning of life. B. They touch humans’ deepest emotions.
C. They show the bond between humans and nature. D. They appeal to readers to reflect on personal feelings.
27. What contribution of Jon Fosse is mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. He explains the importance of linguistic diversity.
B. He has improved the international status of Norway.
C. He boosts the development and preservation of Nynorsk.
D. He shapes the basic writing standard of Norwegian literature.
C
The needs of plus-size consumers have long been the elephant in the room of the fashion industry until body positivity
and fat acceptance movements promoted the slogan that large-bodied people are not those who are left behind. This
size-inclusive trend has become so popular that it is influencing mainstream culture. As a result, fashion brands have finally
decided to extend their size ranges. In 2022, the plus-size market grew twice as fast as the standard size market in both
North America and the UK.
Yet, many consumers say fashion brands broadening their ranges are not truly inclusive. “Inclusive sizing means that
all bodies are included in fashion, not just the ones who fit in standard sizes,” says Marie Southard Ospina, a UK-based
journalist who covers body-image issues. “However, what many designers do right now is pick a number that they think is
big enough to include plus sizes and stop. This is even more disrespectful.”
Researchers also criticize that some brands are just taking advantage of the trend. “Brands that used to promote
so-called perfect bodies in their advertisements are now trying to get in on the trend by adding a few sizes. It doesn’t feel
like they really care about plus-size people,” says Tom Burgess, analyst in fashion industry. “If brands cared about
large-bodied consumers, then it wouldn’t have taken until now to acknowledge that they exist,” he says. “It gives the
impression that companies are just trying to gain a share of the market without a real commitment to the community.”
The fashion industry must go beyond merely producing clothing in a particular range of sizes if they hope to succeed
with a body-diverse world. The whole industry has to connect on a personal level with consumers. That involves showing
shoppers that they are seen, understood and important to brands. “Consumers care about values, and so they want to buy
from brands that reflect the values they believe in. Everyone should enjoy the same range of fashion options,” says
Ludovica Cesareo, professor of marketing at the College of Business in the US.
28. What do the underlined words “the elephant in the room” mean in the first paragraph?
A. The hot issue that is valued. B. The obvious truth that is ignored.
C. The important principle that is recognized. D. The common phenomenon that is criticized.
29. According to Marie, consumers say some fashion brands are not truly inclusive because ________.
A. they pick sizes randomly B. they offer limited plus sizes
C. they treat designers disrespectfully D. they haven’t broadened standard sizes
30. For what do researchers mainly criticize some brands?
A. Their designs. B. Their quality.
C. Their motivations. D. Their advertisements.
31. What does the last paragraph imply?
A. Buyers deserve fashion that respects their values. B. Consumers prefer brands with personalized styles.
C. Brands should catch up with the size-inclusive trend. D. A good brand image is critical in the fashion industry.
D
Psychological science is full of interesting topics, many of which tell a coherent picture of human nature, but some of
which create seemingly contradictory stories. A case in point is the tricky and misunderstood overlap( 重 叠 ) between
strength-based science and the research on narcissism(自恋).
There is now convincing evidence to show that narcissism is on the rise, especially in our youth. In my own research
on strength-based parenting, it is common for people to wrongly label this approach as a recipe for narcissism. Their
argument seems to be that a child who knows their strengths will automatically view themselves as better than everyone
else. It is argued that the self-assurance that comes with identifying and using their positive qualities will make a child
arrogant, selfish and uncaring. Genuine confidence about one’s strengths is categorized as over-confidence; desirable
self-knowledge is branded as excessive self-admiration.
Why does this occur? It’s partly because more is known about narcissism than strengths. While strengths psychology
has largely stayed within the limit of academic journals or has been applied only within certain contexts such as the
workplace, research on narcissism has made its way into the mass media and into our collective consciousness. The New
York Times noted that narcissism is a favored “go-to” topic and that people everywhere are diagnosing others with it.
The fear that a strength-based approach will cause narcissism also occurs because we unknowingly fall prey to
binary(非此即彼) thinking. We mistakenly believe that one cannot be both confident and humble. We focus on Donald
Trump and Kim Kardashian rather than Mahatma Gandhi and Mother Teresa. There’s no way that Gandhi and Mother
Teresa could have achieved what they did without confidence in their strengths, and yet they are both pillars of modesty and
selflessness.
When we assume that strength-focus is the same as a self-focus, we fail to entertain the idea that people who know
their strengths are, actually, more likely to be pro-social and focus on helping others.
It’s tempting to conclude that every young person is at risk of becoming a narcissist but I’d like to stand up for the
thousands of young kids I have worked with who are caring, thoughtful and humble—even when they use their strengths.
32. Which does the underlined word “coherent” possibly mean?
A. Reasonable. B. Primary. C. Complicated. D. Beneficial.
33. Why teenagers’ strengths are often mistaken for narcissism?
A. Teenagers with strengths are always arrogant, selfish and uncaring.
B. The public are more exposed to research on narcissism.
C. There is a lack of strengths in our collective consciousness.
D. Numbers of people are diagnosed with narcissism by doctors.
34. The author mentions Gandhi and Teresa in paragraph 6 to show that ________.
A. they are both victims of binary thinking B. public figures unknowingly fall prey to narcissism
C. confidence is quite important for celebrities D. one can be both modest and sure of himself
35. What’s the author’s attitude towards young kids’ strength-based approaches?
A. Skeptical. B. Neutral. C. Favorable. D. Cautious.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many of us set goals, but sometimes we fail to achieve them. There are many causes why we don’t manage to realize
our goals. 36 There is a way, though, to help address this problem: set reminders. People employ a psychological
strategy called cognitive offloading, where we use a physical action to reduce demands on our brain. Specifically, we may
outsource our intentions from being stored in our brains to reminders outside our head. 37
Understanding the benefits of cognitive offloading can improve our ability to remember and follow through with our
intentions. The biggest benefit is simply that it improves memory performance. It increases the probability that we will
work towards the goals we need to reach. 38 “The more we offload unimportant information, such as items on a
shopping list, the more we can use our brain for those more significant cognitive tasks, such as creativity,” said Sam Gilbert,
professor at the University College London.
39 Still, there are potential negative parts for it. We are more likely to forget what we offloaded if we no longer
access our storage, such as when our smartphone dies. We also tend to offload the important things we most want to
remember. In a surprise test where their reminders were wiped clean, the participants were more likely to forget the
important items and recall the unimportant ones, that is, the more important the intention we want to remember, the more
likely we are to offload it—and to forget it.
We’d better tend to create reminders when we think we need them, but not necessarily when we do need
them. 40 “If our understanding of our memory ability is wrong, this suggests that we will either overuse or underuse
reminders,” Gilbert said. “We can learn by noticing the times that we have forgotten to do something and could have used
reminders to help.”
A. Cognitive offloading has noticeable benefits.
B. One common reason is that we simply forget them.
C. Besides, it can free up our limited cognitive resources.
D. A good example can be documents on our smartphone calendars.
E. The process of cognitive offloading helps us identify false information.
F. Our beliefs about how good our memory is directly influence whether we set them.
G. Other experts say it’s too soon to understand how cognitive offloading affects our brains.

第二节 书面表达
A possible version:
Dear Mark,
Knowing that you are upset because of the relationship with your parents, I feel quite sorry. Actually
I’ve been there before. But things get better now, so I’d like to offer some suggestions to help you out.
My parents, typical Chinese parents, have always taken good care of me, from head to toe. What used
to annoy me most was their particular attention on my academic grades, which put me under great pressure,
or even drove me crazy.
Now, something is different. With a listening ear and an open heart, we start to communicate, because
we both realize the key to a good family relationship lies in mutual understanding. Bearing gratitude in
mind is also a big change for me, since I clearly see my parents’ unconditional love hidden behind their
caring behavior, which has been mistaken by me before.
I sincerely hope the advice mentioned above will help you improve your family relationship, and I
believe you will do it well.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
