Whistler Travel Guide

Snow-capped peaks and powdered steeps; sparkling lakes and rushing waterfalls; challenging hiking

routes and inviting restaurants — Whistler’s offerings suit every season.

Things to do

The entire town displays the ski-chic atmosphere, hosting dozens of ski and snowboard competitions

and festivals annually. In the warmer months, more outdoor enthusiasts come out to play. Visitors can try

hiking or cycling up the mountains. While Whistler is an ideal vacation spot for the active types, other

travelers can enjoy the local museums and art galleries filled with informative exhibits. Plus, there are

family-friendly activities and attractions like summer concerts, along with plenty of shopping options.

When to visit

The best times to visit Whistler are from June through August and between December and March.

How to get around

The best ways to get around Whistler are on foot or by bike. Or, you can take the shuttle buses from

Whistler Village, which transport visitors to Lost Lake Park and the Marketplace. Meanwhile, having a car

will allow you the freedom to explore top attractions like Whistler Train Wreck and Alexander Falls

without having to spend a lot of cash on a cab.

What you need to know

Whistler receives feet of snow each year. If you’re driving in winter, slow down and make sure to

rent or come with a reliable SUV.

Snowslides are likely to occur on Backcountry routes, so only advanced skiers should take to this

off-the-map area.

Whistler’s wilderness is home to many black and grizzly bears. Keep your distance and do not feed

them.

Last summer at a bookstore, my son Henry was fascinated by the cover of the first novel from Peter

Brown’s middle-grade trilogy ( 三 部 曲 ). He then finished it in just two days. “Dad, why did The Wild

Robot have to be so sad?” He tearfully asked me.

The story is set on a remote island, where a robot named Roz learns to survive and communicate with

the island’s creatures, and becomes part of the community. For my son, it was the first book he discovered

on his own; the first to impact him with the mix of tragedy (悲剧) and joy.

When I finished the book, I knew why Henry loved it. In our book club discussion, he described how

Brown’s pictures and words had made the story feel real. When talking about its final scenes, where Roz

leaves to find repairs for her injured body, Henry cried again. His previous reading experiences had

cheerful, “happily-ever-after” endings, but this book introduced him to the beauty of complex emotions. I

tried to explain how sadness can enhance the meaning of happy moments, but failed to fully convince him.

Once our discussion ended, Henry requested to buy The Wild Robot Escapes and instantly fell in love

with it. He read the first two books repeatedly, so you can imagine his excitement when we finally got a

copy of The Wild Robot Protects.

We both agree it is worth the wait. Roz leaves the island again to stop an underwater threat: “the

poison tide.” Brown expertly balances between breathtaking adventure and unsettling ideas — not just

happiness and sadness, but also, given the climate-change undercurrents, hope and despair.

And, here’s something special about Roz: her physical clumsiness and confusion about life, conveyed

through her expressive eyes and downturned mouth. Her story reflects the challenges of surviving in a

strange place, much like a child’s journey. Readers love Roz. They learn from her. Even better, they learn

alongside her. Roz gave Henry the power to push through the first book’s sad parts, getting him ready to

appreciate that, sometimes, sadness isn’t a bad thing to feel.

4. What drove the author to read The Wild Robot?

A. Its tragic ending. B. Henry’s tearful recommendation.

C. Its attractive cover. D. Henry’s emotional response to it.

5. What is one theme of The Wild Robot Protects?

A. Family and community. B. Concerns of global issues.

C. Exploration of the ocean. D. Man-robot relationship.

6. What makes Roz in the trilogy special?

A. Her childlike expressions. B. Her robotic power.

C. Her struggling experiences. D. Her adventurous spirit.

7. Which message does this text seem to communicate?

A. Misfortune inspires great literary works.

B. Robot stories work like magic on children.

C. Book discussions help kids survive tragedies.

D. Reading literature facilitates personal growth.

“Why does grandpa have ear hair?” Just a few years ago my child was so curious to know “why” and

“how” that we had to cut off her questions five minutes before bedtime. Now a soon-to-be fourth grader,

she says that she dislikes school because “it’s not fun to learn.” I am shocked. As a scientist and parent, I

have done everything I can to promote a love of learning in my children. Where did I go wrong?

My child’s experience is not unique. Developmental psychologist Susan Engel notes that curiosity —

defined as “spontaneous (自发的) investigation and eagerness for new information” — drops dramatically

in children by the fourth grade.

In Wonder: Childhood and the Lifelong Love of Science, Yale psychologist Frank C. Keil details the

development of wonder — a spontaneous passion to explore, discover, and understand. He takes us on a

journey from its early development, when wonder drives common sense and scientific reasoning, through

the drop-off in wonder that often occurs, to the trap of life in a society that devalues wonder.

As Keil notes, children are particularly rich in wonder while they are rapidly developing causal

mechanisms (因 果 机 制 ) in the preschool and early elementary school years. They are sensitive to the

others’ knowledge and goals, and they expertly use their desire for questioning. Children’s questions,

particularly those about “why” and “how,” support the development of causal mechanisms which can be

used to help their day-to-day reasoning.

Unfortunately, as Keil notes, “adults greatly underestimate young children’s causal mechanisms.” In

the book, Wonder, Keil shows that we can support children’s ongoing wonder by playing games with them

as partners, encouraging question-asking, and focusing on their abilities to reason and conclude.

A decline in wonder is not unavoidable. Keil reminds us that we can accept wonder as a desirable

positive quality that exists in everyone. I value wonder deeply, and Wonder has given me hope by

proposing a future for my children that will remain wonder-full.

8. What is a common problem among fourth graders?

A. They upset their parents too often. B. Their desire to learn declines sharply.

C. Their love for fun disappears quickly. D. They ask too many strange questions.

9. What can be inferred about children’s causal mechanisms in paragraph 4?

A. They control children’s sensitivity. B. They slightly change in early childhood.

C. They hardly support children’s reasoning. D. They develop through children’s questioning.

10. How can parents support children’s ongoing wonder according to Keil?

A. By estimating their abilities. B. By welcoming inquiring minds.

C. By monitoring their games. D. By providing reasonable conclusions.

New research shows that removing black rhinos’ horns (犀牛角) to make them less attractive to illegal

hunters is reducing their territory (领地) sizes and making them less sociable with each other.

The study, published in the journal PNAS, found that de-homed South African rhinos have home

ranges that are 45 percent smaller than those of complete animals, and that they were 37 percent less likely

to engage in social interactions.

“The big, dominant bulls that used to have very large territories that overlapped with a lot of females

may now have much less territory and much less reproductive (繁殖的) success,” says Vanessa Duth, who

led the work at Switzerland’s University of Neuchtel.

“It’s really hard to predict the effects of this,” she says. “It doesn’t mean that population success will

necessarily decline, because it might open up gaps for younger males that would not have had the space or

the means before.” Indeed, a University of Bristol study published last year showed that de-horning (去角)

does not negatively affect populations overall.

But such unintended behavioral consequences necessarily feed into judgments about whether this

highly invasive procedure is worthwhile. Remarkably, perhaps, there is little hard evidence either way. “No

one’s put all the data together to say whether it’s a really effective measure,” says Duth.

“What is clear is that the introduction of de-horning and a decline in illegal hunting has occurred at the

same time, “she adds. “But de-horning has been accompanied by other conservation measures that may be

more effective.

“It’s incredibly complicated,” says Lucy Chimes, a member of the Bristol team. “There are so many

other factors involved. You have to consider what other security measures are being carried out — fencing,

patrols, staff numbers — and poverty levels surrounding parks, their nearness to national borders and

whether there is community engagement.” Chimes is currently planning a project that aims to separate

these and other factors. In the meantime, Duth believes that dehorning is a worthwhile tool of last course

of action. “A rhino that is behaving a little bit strangely is better than a dead rhino.”

12. What is the purpose of removing the horns of black rhinos?

A. To make them less sociable.

B. To affect their reproductive success.

C. To reduce their home ranges.

D. To protect them from being hunted.

13. What does the underlined phrase “invasive procedure” in paragraph 5 refer to?

A. The removal of rhino horns.

B. The loss of rhino territories.

C. The impact on rhino population.

D. The change of rhino behavior.

第 4 页 共 8 页

14. What is Chimes’ attitude toward the de-horning of black rhinos?

A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain.

15. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

A. De-horning rhinos shows satisfying effects.

B. Various factors lead to the decline in illegal hunting.

C. De-horning is the best action researchers will take.

D. Rhinos are supposed to behave a little bit strangely.

Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman developed a clever learning method known as the

Feynman Technique. It involves explaining what you’re learning to others. By teaching what you’ve

learned from memory, you engage in active recall. 16 It also ensures that you understand the topic,

because you can only explain an idea if you truly understand it. The technique consists of four repeatable

steps.

To begin, choose a concept or topic you wish to fully understand. 17 The more interested you

are, the faster you’ll grasp it. Moreover, a personally interesting topic will keep you motivated and

engaged.

18 Write notes and explain it in a way that makes sense to a five-year-old. If you’d rather

avoid actually teaching someone, you can just teach it to an imaginary audience. But it works much better

if you use a real person. They’ll be able to let you know when something isn’t clear.

While teaching you may discover gaps in your understanding. 19 Review your notes, reread

books, or seek external help to ensure you have a complete understanding of the context before moving

forward.

Now that you fully grasp the concept, test your understanding by trying to teach it to another person.

This will help you identify any remaining areas of uncertainty you need to revisit.

The Feynman Technique is a great way for kids and grown-ups to learn. 20 You need to

actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else, However, with

great efforts in mastering this method, you’ll see your learning results improve quicker than ever before.

A. It is mentally demanding.

B. This helps the information stick in your mind better.

C. Once you have chosen a topic, you can teach it to someone else.

D. Your curiosity about it will determine the pace of your learning.

E. Teach it to a five-year-old, who would give you direct feedback.

F. Active engagement plays a key role in promoting deeper learning.

G. When this happens, refer back to the original material for the missing pieces.

In our weekly staff meeting, our editor Ashley was not pleased with the quality of our reporting. “Our

readership is way down. We need better stories for this Thursday’s school newspaper. Does anybody have

any ideas?” she said.

I handed her my article about our basketball team beating Deerfield High School the previous night by

one point. “Sports stories are fun,” she said, “but not good enough for the front page. We need something to

really get people’s attention.”

After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, “Perry is missing!”

Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot(吉祥物) for ten years. He played an important

role in students’ lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events,

inspiring a sense of unity among students.

Everyone gathered around Perry’s empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came

over and showed me a photo. “You’re a reporter for the school paper, right? I happened to take this

yesterday,” he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large

hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.

“He must have stolen Perry to get back at us for winning the game!” Ashley cried. We hurried back to

the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline “Deerfield Stole Perry.” “This

is just the story we need. Everyone will read it,” Ashley said confidently.

After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15 pm, but our

game against Deerfield hadn’t started until 4:30 pm. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even

played? An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.

I went to Perry’s usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. “He’s not missing. He’s retired.

He’s ready for some quieter days,” he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested

writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.

注意:

1.续写词数应为 150 个左右;

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

To my surprise, Ashley insisted on reporting the “Deerfield Stole Perry” story.
