I think I might be a NIMBY. This is rather hard for me to accept, because that shortened word

(Not In My Back Yard) is typically used to criticize someone as self-centered. I even recall when I

first heard the word—at school, some 30 years ago. My teacher explained it was that UK property

developers are frequently frustrated by hypocritical homeowners, who claim to be in favour of

progress (new housing, for instance), but then object when actual proposals emerge to develop such

things in their postcodes.

As a young adult I lived in London, so I never had cause to revise my opinion. But then I moved

to the green belt where our house is surrounded by fields. Look out, and you see nothing man-made at

all, unless the farmer is taking out his combine harvester. The view was the reason we bought here.

Thanks to protective planning regulations introduced decades ago, here was a place where an

authentic rural identity had been kept alive.

We could have headed 40 minutes further north, and settled upon another similar looking village

with less threat of being swallowed up by the city. But then, that wouldn’t be the same at all, would it?

Our village’s closeness to London is the precise thing that elevates it above and beyond its wonderful

views—because the fact that it might one day be destroyed and turned to concrete is what makes it

most special. It’s not just a place you live in. It’s a place you feel an urge to protect.

Yet the planning applications come thick and fast, each application abandoning prior

commitments to preservation. On a weekly basis, some leaflet drops through my door from local

campaigners protesting 177 houses here, 231 houses there. I always sigh and attempt to evaluate these

“NIMBY” flyers properly, rather than just write a complaint to the council. After all, new houses need

to be built somewhere, right?

And if we didn’t live where we do, these plans wouldn’t upset me. It’s because of their intention

to build so close to my property —In My Back Yard— that I’m so aware of the changes that such

developments would bring. So, I add my signature to the flyers.

4. What does the underlined word “hypocritical” in Paragraph 1 mean?

A. Narrow-minded. B. Indifferent. C. Two-faced. D. Hesitant.

5. Why does the author mention “combine harvester” in Paragraph 2?

试卷第 2页,共 8页

{#{QQABbQKEggCoQABAAAhCEQXSCAGQkgCCAQgGgBAAoAAASRFABAA=}#}

A. To stress the uncommon sight of artificial elements.

B. To promote modern machinery in the village.

C. To explain the ongoing agricultural activities.

D. To indicate damage caused by regulations.

6. Why does the author prefer his village to another similar option?

A. He is attracted to its beautiful landscape.

B. He sees the benefits of its urbanization.

C. He finds the convenience of living near London.

D. He feels it special and a desire to protect.

7. What is the author’s attitude toward NIMBYism according to Paragraph 5?

A. Enthusiastic. B. Dismissive. C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.

Humans act with purpose, but much is still unknown about how we become purposeful agents—

that is, how we develop the ability to willfully make things happen. In a recent study to explore

agency’s mysterious roots, we tried to catch infants (婴儿) in the act of discovering their own agency,

thereby revealing the process of agency formation.

Researchers place a baby into a cradle with a mobile suspended above. Then a scientist ties one

end of a string to the mobile and the other to the infant’s foot. Now if the baby moves, the toy will, too.

By observing babies in this setup, scientists can watch as the infants learn and recall a simple

cause-and-effect interaction: kick a foot and the mobile moves.

As predicted by the researchers, infants kicked significantly more when their foot was tethered

(拴住) to the mobile than when it was not. However, when an experimenter pulled the string to make

the mobile move instead, infants moved less than when the mobile was at rest. Furthermore, when we

freed the babies’ foot from the mobile, they kept on kicking at higher rate to make the toy

respond—and were visibly frustrated when that did not happen.

Our observations also pointed to a notable pattern: The babies’ initial movements consisted of

twisting and pushing without clear direction. But once tethered to the mobile, the more intensely they

moved, the more their attention was drawn to the effect their kicking had on it. At some point, the

infants must have figured out that they had agency, thus the aimless movements became intentional

action—a highly coordinated exchange between the tethered infant and the mobile.

The baby-mobile study emphasizes how understanding the relationship between an organism and

its environment is essential to uncovering the origins of directed behavior. The experience of agency

emerges only when an organism senses it is coupled to its environment. In this way of thinking, the

interaction and relationship between the two are crucial for purpose to arise.

8. What can we learn about agency according to the text?

A. It is an inborn ability without learning. B. It is embodied in babies most evidently.

C. It exists in all aspects of our daily life. D. It is a response with our surroundings.

9. How did the researchers make the experiment convincing?

A. By predicting multiple possible results. B. By tracking babies’ behaviour precisely.

高三英语试卷 第 3页,共 8页

{#{QQABbQKEggCoQABAAAhCEQXSCAGQkgCCAQgGgBAAoAAASRFABAA=}#}

C. By setting up comparative experiments. D. By building proper interpretation models.

10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?

A. Analysis of experimental phenomena. B. Supplement to experimental details.

C. Explanation of experimental design. D. Summary of experimental outcomes.

11. What is the main purpose of the text?

A. To uncover the process of agency formation.

B. To report a cutting-edge discovery about agency.

C. To guide people on how to take advantage of agency.

D. To clarify the importance of environment to creatures.

If a stranger offered you a free cookie, you might well eat it. But what if they offered to also give

you $2? You might politely decline and walk away thinking, “Something smells fishy.”

In a study published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, researchers found that people

tend to turn down offers of “free money” as well as unusually high salaries or suspiciously cheap

services because they seem “too good to be true.” The research bridges economics and psychology to

explain why financial attraction can backfire.

In the initial experiment, nearly 40 percent of participants ate a cookie offered freely—compared

with about 20 percent of those offered $2 as well. “People typically imagine things like that someone

did something disgusting to the cookie,” says study lead author Andrew J. Vonasch, a psychological

scientist at University of Canterbury in New Zealand.

If someone seems to violate accepted norms such as self-interest without explanation, we assume

they have hidden motives and infer there will be “phantom costs”: imagined consequences that reduce

what Vonasch calls an offer’s “psychological value”.

Factors beyond the present moment may come into play. “Understanding that others’ noticeable

overgenerosity may put us in their debt could also help explain people’s reluctance,” says Rachel

McCloy, a psychologist studying decision-making at England’s University of Reading.” The old

maxim “there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ is clearly alive and well.”

Another experiment found that high scorers on measures of distrust inferred more phantom costs.

The researchers also showed how to minimize the effect: simply provide a reason for the deal. The

“cheap flights” experiment included a condition where the seats were revealed to be very

uncomfortable.” Uncomfortable seats aren’t typically a selling point,” Vonasch says. “But telling

people the seats were uncomfortable made them more willing to take them because it was sufficient

clarification.”

12. What do we know about financial attraction in the first 2 paragraphs?

A. It is regarded as an unexpected positive outcome.

B. It may cause the contrary effect of that intended.

C. It can fuel the interest and bridge the gap between people.

D. It may enhance the value of an offer.

13. Why is the saying “there is no such thing as a free lunch” quoted in the last but one paragraph?

A. To promote generosity in society.

B. To serve as a supporting argument.

C. To highlight hidden costs of generous offers.

D. To remind people to be cautious of free items.

14. Which case can reduce “Phantom Costs”?

A. Offering more money. B. Providing additional unrelated gifts.

C. Discounting the price further. D. Giving a seemingly reasonable explanation.

15. Which could be the best title of the text?

A. Phantom Costs: Why Some Deals Seem Too Good to Be True

B. Phantom Costs: What Is the Science of Financial Attraction

C. Psychological Value: Why People Reject Free Money and Offer

D. Psychological Value: How People interpret Overgenerosity in Deals

Always the outsider?

One of the things I used to fear was being the new girl in the office — in the kitchen making

coffee while the in-crowd chatted about the weekend. I worried that I wasn’t good enough or smart

enough. 16 I’d struggle for words while trying to look cool. Back at school, I was best friends

with Kate and Cathy until we had to walk across the road in twos, and guess who was left out? I’ve

always been the outsider from school days to office life. Or is that the story I have told myself?

As in so many areas of life, the only thing you can control is your response. I remind myself of

what Eleanor Roosevelt said: 17 The only person making me feel like an outsider is me. These

are the lessons I have learned along the way:

Starting anywhere new, you just have to find your people, the ones that get you. 18

It’s OK to take your time and figure out if you’re the right fit for each other. Have faith that you will

find the right people for you.

Very often it’s our belief systems that tell us we don’t fit in. We are replaying the stories from

childhood and need to rewrite the script (剧本). 19 When are you assuming that you’ll be on

your own? What fears are you projecting onto yourself?

Practice self-acceptance. Remind yourself that it’s OK to have a different way of operating in

the world.

20 Sometimes, interactions with random strangers can help us feel more confident in all

our relationships. For example, volunteering can make us feel connected and give us a sense of

belonging.

A. Don’t charge into friendships, though.

B. Start noticing your patterns of mentality.

C. If I was asked a question, panic would set in.

D. No one can make you feel lower without your agreement.

G. We all feel a little lost and awkward sometimes—you’re not the only one.

On a sunny afternoon, my friend Ollie and I were enjoying skateboarding at our local park. Our

mood was light until Ollie spotted a poster for the upcoming Harvest Fair. The idea of attending it was

thrilling, but the ticket price of $50 quickly iced our enthusiasm.

While we were thinking over the cost, our attention was drawn to the list of attractions. Among

the various activities, we noticed that our favorite band-Eagles was going to perform. We couldn’t

help but break into singing our favorite song by them. What added to our excitement was the pie

contest in the poster, a delightful reminder of our shared memory. It used to be the most popular event

in our community. But thinking of the expensive tickets, which seemed to be a shadow over our

excitement, we all sighed. Then I suggested going to my parents’ store to see if they could help.

Upon arriving, my dad told us he had some good news, showing some tickets to us. They were

the very ones we had seen in the poster! My dad explained that his old partner had made a request to

hang a poster here for the Harvest Fair, and in return, he offered us free passes. Much to my delight,

there were six tickets for five people in our family and an extra one for my friend! The news was like

a breath of fresh air, bringing unexpected joy into our day. We could all set out to experience the fair

together, no one missing out.

Just then, Mrs. Smith, our awesome 80-year-old neighbor, walked unsteadily towards us. “I just

saw the poster in your window. How I used to love going to fairs!” She paused, with her eyes

dropping before she continued. “But it’s hard for me to get around now, and tickets cost so much these

基础写作

An Unforgettable Experience of Labour

During the National Day holiday that had just finished, I spent one day participating in a local

environmental clean- up initiative.

On that day, I joined a group of volunteers to pick up litter in the wetland park. Armed with

gloves and trash bags, we spent hours collecting discarded bottles, cans, and plastic waste. It was a

laborious task, but the sense of purpose was inspiring. As we cleaned, we also educated visitors

about the importance of environmental conservation.

The experience was not only about physical labor but also a lesson about community spirit and

personal responsibility. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment, knowing that my efforts, however

small, contributed to a cleaner and healthier environment.

Possible version

Ollie approached me, seemingly to say something. As Mrs. Smith continued to gaze longingly

at the poster, he whispered, “Why don’t we give her the extra ticket?” Touched by his thoughtfulness

and generosity, I nodded. When we presented her with the ticket, she was overjoyed and lost for

words. My dad winked at Ollie, silently expressing gratitude for his kindness. The fair was great,

filled with laughter, music, and the freshly baked pies. But the very best part was seeing Mrs.

Smith’s broad smile.
