Our English literature teacher Miss Linda was new to teaching. But she always did her best to make learning
fun and pleasant. But the thing that truly solidified her spot as my favorite teacher was that for every student’s
birthday she would give us a personalized notebook.
It was just a simple small notebook, but she had filled the first page with her own words which made me
realize how good a person I was. As a teenager who had a terrible home life, it made all the difference in how I
acted the rest of the year.
In a session of English class, we were discussing a passage we had read. One student Jack made a point. Miss
Linda basically said Jack was wrong. The next day, after we took our seats, she said, “Before we begin, I was
thinking about what Jack said yesterday. Let’s take a look at that again. My knowledge is limited in this field where
you are definitely better than me.” She repeated Jack’s point and encouraged discussions among students. After the
discussions, it became apparent that Jack’s point really held water. I was impressed by Miss Linda who
acknowledged her mistake publicly.
After class, I had to purchase some red punch cards to get lunch at school. Unfortunately, I didn’t have that
much money to purchase enough cards. Miss Linda noticed I often skipped meals and brought an extra sandwich to
me in private. She not only offered me the food which I desperately needed, but also the self-respect which I valued
as a teenage boy. Also, she never criticized any students in public, which really made her popular among students.
4. What might be included in the personalized notebook?
A. Students’ test scores.
B. Students’ advantages.
第4页/共 12页
C. Miss Linda’s blessing.
D. Miss Linda’s own thoughts.
5. Which statement about Jack is true?
A. Class discussions proved Jack’s point is right.
B. Jack proved his point by himself.
C. Miss Linda agreed with Jack’s point at first.
D. Jack was more knowledgeable than Miss Linda.
6. Why was Miss Linda enjoying popularity among students?
A. She always made learning fun and pleasant.
B. She gave each student a notebook for his birthday.
C. She had the courage to admit her mistake.
D. She paid attention to students’ dignity.
7. Which of the following can best describe Miss Linda?
A. Humorous and open-minded. B. Generous and strict.
C. Caring and modest. D. Determined and warm-hearted.

Language is the most important tool for human communication and is essential for life in our society. Dr.
Sabrina Turker from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig says, “Despite a
lot of research on how the brain processes language, we still don’t know much about how language is organized in
the human brain. Most of what we know comes from small studies with only a few subjects, and these findings
have not been confirmed in other studies.” This meta-analysis aims to help change that.
Based on many neuroscientific (神经科学的) experiments using brain imaging techniques and involving
thousands of subjects, this analysis gives us a deeper understanding of how the brain organizes language. By
combining results from different studies, researchers can see which parts of the brain are active during various
language tasks. This approach helps us understand the basic principles of how the brain processes language.
The researchers not only studied language as a process in general, but also clearly addressed subordinate (从属
的) processes: the meaning of language at the level of words and sentences (semantics); the phonetic structure of
language (phonology); grammar and the arrangement of linguistic elements (syntax); the phonetic structure of
language at sentence level, including melody, intonation and rhythm (prosody).
Besides the well-known language areas in the left side of the brain, the researchers discovered that parts of the
brain below the cerebral cortex and the cerebellum also play an important role in language processes.
第5页/共 12页
Gesa Hartwigsen, Professor of Cognitive and Biological Psychology at Leipzig University, said, “Our findings
may serve future studies involving language recovery after brain injury, for example caused by stroke. And they
could help to improve models of language processing.”
8. What does the study focus on?
A. Why language is important.
B. How the brain organises language.
C. How the brain influences a person.
D. Why we control the language abilities.
9. How did researchers draw their conclusion?
A. By measuring subjects’ brain activity.
B. By analyzing quantities of experimental data.
C. By building a database for many experiments.
D. By conducting interviews with hundreds of subjects.
10. What do we know about the study from paragraph 3?
A. It is simple. B. It is limited.
C. It is specific. D. It is confusing.
11. What is the scientific value of the study?
A. Treating brain injury. B. Finding the cause of stroke.
C. Helping language recovery. D. Improving language teaching.
D
Everyone is worried about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in health care. Opinion pieces debate the ability
of AI to manage patient needs. Doctors are alternately criticizing and advocating for how it can be used in their
practices, and patients are questioning how it will impact their quality of care and their bills. But the reality is that
the big bad wolf at the door of the health care industry isn’t the unknown of machine learning—it’s the very real
threat of innovation leading the charge without doctors controlling the direction.
Trust forms the bedrock of an ethical (道德的) health care system, which creates an environment that prioritizes
the well-being of the patient above all else. Bu as health care startups (初创公司) attempt to reshape the delivery of
patient care, major concerns have emerged regarding the prioritization of business interests over patient outcomes.
Innovation is the key to promising new treatments and cures that will ultimately change the lives of millions—
but the lack of provider involvement in new health care businesses is putting patients in grave danger.
第6页/共 12页
Health care is more complex than any other field, and demands the highest standards when it comes to ethical
practices. There is no room for trial and error when human lives are on the line, nor is it acceptable to misuse private
patient data for profit-driven purposes. Yet we’re seeing new business models grow at alarming rates without regard
for ethical health care practices. It’s this “growth at all costs” attitude that blurs the lines between profitability and
patient outcomes. Investors and executives are putting themselves in positions of power without any strategic
advising from an experienced medical provider.
The modern-day patient has evolved significantly—individuals are showing up to appointments having done
extensive research, and not always on reliable platforms. Patients must be mindful of what information they are
giving out and the associated comfort level of it being shared. Medical history can have unexpected results for your
entire life. Could the release of certain information impact your family, job, or career? The provider’s job is to
advocate for the patient. This includes demanding transparency regarding data handling and security rules,
challenging questionable marketing claims, and ensuring businesses prioritize evidence-based medicine and patient
safety.
So, we have to make full use of a provider’s influence and experience, ensuring they are used to promote patient
well-being and protect their interests at every turn. As trusted custodians (管 理 人 ) of patient data, health care
providers bear the responsibility of ensuring that the business prioritizes privacy protection and obeys data security
rules. At the same time, startup companies must take steps to ensure data security and patient-centric ethical practices
with medical professionals in advisory and decision-making positions.
12. What leads to the author’s concerns about the role of AI in health care?
A. The ability of AI to meet patients’ needs.
B. The lack of doctors’ guidance in practice.
C. Doctors’ criticism of AI in their practices.
D. Patients’ complaints about the quality of their care.
13. What does the underlined word “blurs” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Confuses. B. Links. C. Marks. D. Balances.
14. It is implied in this passage that we should ________.
A. limit the development of AI in health care startups
B. encourage doctors to be equipped with AI technologies
C. hold a critical view towards innovation in the health care area
D. inform patients of the threat of AI technologies in health care businesses
第7页/共 12页
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. How Is Innovation Advocating for Patients?
B. How Is Innovation Influencing People’s Lives?
C. How Are Some Health Care Startups Putting Patients at Risk?
D. How Are Some Health Care Startups Developing AI Technologies?
