Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette” in the Philippines) made landfall on Siargao Island in
southeastern Philippines at 1:30 pm local time on Thursday, December 16. The typhoon was the 15th
storm to hit the country in 2021 and was the strongest storm of 2021. Almost 16 million Filipinos were
facing threats including strong winds, heavy rains, flooding, landslides, displacement and risking loss
of life, home, livelihood and agriculture. Around 700,000 of them were children.
UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund) expressed deep concern for
children and families at risk and announced its commitment to providing support to the Philippine
government. Reyn Ambag was one of the children who were rescued during the typhoon.
12-year-old Reyn Ambag is a grade 7 student living on the island of Siargao. He goes to school in
San Isidro National High School which is located in the Municipality of San Isidro. With Values
Education as his favorite subject in school, Reyn is always ready to help others.
Reyn is raised by his mother who is a single parent and runs a retail store alone. Aside from his
mother, his cousin has also been living with them to help out in the absence of Reyn’s father. Reyn’s
mother provides for all three of them. She is able to support their daily needs and Reyn’s schooling by
the income she gets from the small retail store.
During Typhoon Odette, Reyn’s family stayed inside the comfort room of the school where they
were evacuated ( 疏 散 ) to. There, he witnessed through the window how the strong winds of the
typhoon destroyed the area. They stayed there until the storm subsided and it was safe for them to go
out. Upon returning to their home, they were astonished to find that their house was damaged due to the
fallen trees.
After observing the delays in restoring the electricity in their community, Reyn wanted to pursue a
related job in the future. “I want to be an electrician someday so that if a power cut would happen
because of a typhoon, I would be able to help in restoring it for free,” said Reyn.
24. What is the first paragraph mainly about?

Women in post-pregnancy怀孕 tend to respond slower to the outside world than they did before.
In the West, this phenomenon is called “pregnancy brain”. In China, people describe it as “women are
slower and less sharp for three years after giving birth.” However, studies showed that they are not less
sharp. Rather, their brains are becoming better wired for parenting at the cost of memory.
In their 2016 research, Elseline Hoekzema and her team from the Netherlands scanned 25
women’s brains before and during pregnancy. The MRI results showed that there was a decrease in the
amount of expectant mothers’ grey matter in their brains, which is responsible for multiple functions,
including muscle control, emotions, speech and memory.
The decrease in grey matter isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hoekzema compared it with the drop in
the grey matter of teenagers during puberty(青春期). According to a previous study, during puberty,
teenagers’ hormones cause a reduction in unnecessary synapses (突触), the connections between nerve
cells. This process makes the brain work more efficiently. Likewise, the reduction of grey matter in
new mothers’ brains might lead to greater parenting abilities.
The changes in the region of grey matter affected by pregnancy are known to play a role in social
cognition(认知). This change might help a new mother better understand and decode her baby’s facial
expressions and needs. Based on the results, scientists believed that the female brain experiences
changes to help them better prepare for motherhood.
In a recent study led by Jonny Kohl from London’s Francis Crick Institute, experiments on the
brains of pregnant mice provide concrete evidence that specific hormones improved connections
between neurons(神经元) associated with parenting behaviors. While conducted on mice, this brain
remodeling agrees with previous human studies, suggesting shared mechanisms, Newsweek reported.
However, this improvement in parenting-related skills might come at a cost. A 2010 study showed
pregnant women have poorer memory skills than non-pregnant women, particularly concerning spatial
(空间的)recognition memory. This explains why many pregnant women sometimes lose their way
on familiar routes.
And according to Hoekzema, the changes in women’s brains are long-lasting. So, next time your
mom gets lost in a familiar place, be patient and kind to her. After all, her brain changed to bring you
into the world!
28. During pregnancy, what happens to women’s brains?
A. They increase in amount. B. They become more complex.
C. They generate new neuro cells. D. They lose some grey matter.
29. How might the changes in women’s brains during pregnancy benefit them?
A. By improving their work efficiency. B. By boosting their muscle control.
C. By strengthening their social cognition. D. By adjusting their emotional state.
30. What do we know about Jonny Kohl’s study?
A. It conflicted with Hoekzema’s team’s findings.
B. It compared pregnant mice with non-pregnant ones.
C. It explored the link between hormone changes and parenting behaviors.
D. It confirmed the long-lasting effects of pregnancy on women’s brains.
31. What is one potential disadvantage of brain changes in pregnant women?
A. Poorer communication skills. B. A weaker sense of direction.
C. A shorter length of attention. D. Decreased problem-solving abilities.
D
The first time you start to read a poem, you must relax and read through it without concentrating
on its meaning. Imagine you are meeting a person for the first time. You will just observe him and
共8页 第 4 页
listen to his voice, as well as watch his shapes or movements, but you have not yet known what he is all
about. Likewise, you may enjoy the sound, rhythms, or wording, and form some first impressions about
a poem.
On your second reading, you should concentrate more on the general meaning of the poem. This
time, you will want to compare your feelings about the poem by now with how you felt before. Are
they the same? What is different and why?
Your third reading will focus more on details: the words, phrases, or images. Looking up any
unfamiliar words in a dictionary so that you can gain a more accurate understanding. Using the
example given above about meeting someone, his image will change gradually and slightly as you meet
and learn more about him. Therefore, in your additional readings, it is a good idea to compare your
understanding each time with the understanding before.
A helpful approach to further understanding a poem is to summarize it in your own words.
Compare your version of understanding with those of others reading the same poem, and listen to how
they form such opinions. Remember, however, that there is no exact or right meaning for a poem, as
most poets have admitted they themselves are not exactly sure what they meant when writing certain
lines or phrases; they have even been heard to say on occasion that sometimes words just seem to “drop
from heaven” and land on the page. That is what awakening the imagination is all about. If you are
lucky, and if you practice enough, magical things may happen when you write and you may be able to
produce a beautiful poem or other work of art yourself.
32.Why does the author give the example of “meeting a person” ?
A. To arouse readers’ interest B. To support his argument
C. To offer some advice D. To interpret his point
33.What will you gain from the third reading of a poem?
A. General meaning. B. Rhythm beauty.
C. Deeper meaning. D. Poetic structure.
34.What does the underlined word “ that ” refer to?
A. Poets themselves don’t understand their poems.
B. Beautiful poems drop from heaven occasionally.
C. Poetic meanings are open to different explanations.
D. Writing a summary helps understand a poem.
35.What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Inspiration and hard work help create great poems.
B. Poetry is an expression of one’s will in words.
C. Practice and patience make a man perfect.
D. Luck marches with those who give their very best.

WHY A DOSE OF FEAR IS GOOD FOR YOU
Eleanor Roosevelt once said: “Do one thing every day that scares you.” She was onto something.
Science has shown that feeling fear — in the right doses (量) — has several benefits.
Feeling fear is fun and exciting. Many people scare themselves on purpose. 36
When you step outside your comfort zone, it is fear that makes you feel alive, which is fun and
exciting. The excitement generated can also help reduce depression by increasing adrenaline (肾上腺
素), which in turn increases excitement and glucose (changed into energy). 37 A dose of fear is
an “eraser” for the mind.
共8页 第 5 页
38 Being afraid of something can remind you of an area of your life that is limiting you.
For instance, if you’re afraid of flying but face the fear and gather up the courage to step on an airplane,
you can travel the world. Adding to your experiences means that you’ll create a varied life. You’ll also
have fewer regrets.
Fear makes you aware of what’s really important in life. How often have you said to yourself:
“When I have more time, I’ll spend it with my family, pursue my passion, eat healthier or exercise
more”? Fear makes you realize that “now” is the only time you have to achieve and follow through
what is most important. 39
Some say where fear meets courage is the sweet spot in which mountains get scaled and rivers are
run. 40 We should all embrace our fear. Not the big fears that are life-threatening but the
helpful fears that come in small doses.
A. Fear helps you succeed.
B. “Later” is never ensured.
C. Fear allows you to live life to the fullest.
D. They watch scary movies, ride roller coasters or go skydiving.
E. And every time you come through a challenge, you feel empowered.
F. Most of all, fear can be the birth place of change, creativity and innovation.
G. Actually, it’s nearly impossible to be thinking of your worries when you are experiencing fear.

A Secret Promise Kept
When I was a little boy, I loved to visit the fire station where my father worked. Sometimes Dad

would give me a ten cents to buy a soda(汽水).
One day, I took two friends to the station to show my dad off. I asked Dad if we could each have a
soda before we went home for lunch. I sensed just the slightest hesitation in my father’s voice. But he
said “sure” and gave us each a dime(一毛钱). We each bought a soda and headed home for lunch and a
summer afternoon of swimming.
When I came home, I heard my parents talking. Mom seemed upset with Dad, and then I heard my
name mentioned. “You should have just said you didn’t have money for sodas. Brian would have
understood. We don’t have any extra money, and you need to have your lunch.”
I suddenly realized the sacrifice(牺牲) my father had made for it. For the next twenty years, he
worked three jobs to support my big family.
One afternoon Dad’s old car broke down, and he asked me to take him to his doctor's appointment.
As I pulled up to the firehouse, I saw Dad outside around a brand-new pickup truck with the other
firemen. It was a beauty. Dad said, “Someday, I’ll own a truck like that.”
My brothers and I were doing well in business. We had offered to buy him a truck, but he refused.
When Dad stepped out of the doctor’s office, his face was pale. “Let’s go,” was all he said.
We drove by the old house, the lake and the corner store, and Dad started talking about the
memories each place held and how proud he was of us. That was when I knew he was dying, which
totally shocked me. He made me promise that I would never tell anyone of his impending(迫近的)
death. I agreed, knowing it was the toughest secret to keep.

【答案】
Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m Li Hua, one of your customers. I am writing to complain about the poor service
of your waiters and express my dissatisfaction with their rude attitude to us.
Yesterday I went to your restaurant to have lunch but I had an awful experience. I
was having beef noodles when suddenly I found two flies in them, which made me
disgusted. What’s worse, I asked the waiter to change for another dish, only to be
completely ignored by him. Therefore, I’d like you to investigate the matter seriously
and make a formal apology to me. Personally, it’s time that your service should be
improved to live up to the customers’ expectations.
I’d appreciate it if you could give due attention to the matter.
Yours,
Li Hua

读后续写:
One possible version:
At the time, I was looking to buy a new truck, so I invited Dad to go to the local car
dealer’s(经销商) shop with me. As we entered the showroom and I started talking with
the salesman, I spotted Dad looking at a beautiful chocolate-brown pickup truck,
running his hand over it. I said to my father, “Dad, you really like that brown truck,
don’t you?” Dad nodded smilingly. “Why don’t you go inside and see how it feels?
I’ll look at the other trucks.” Having looked around, I decided on a blue truck. I told the
salesman I would take the brown one too, for my dad, after which we made the deal.
I walked to my father with the key to the brown truck to my father. “Dad, the brown
truck is yours now. A gift from me.” “What?!” he exclaimed, “I can’t accept it.” “You
have made too many sacrifices for us. You deserve it.” Hearing what I said, Dad held
my hands tightly, tears welling up in his eyes, saying “Thank you, son.” I asked him to
promise me not to tell anyone I bought the truck for him. Grinning from ear to ear, he
nodded a yes and got into his dream car. We both kept our promise, knowing it was a
promise of love.

【21 题详解】细节理解题。由 Marble Caves 中的“The best time to visit: during sunrise
and sunset, when the sun’s rays light up the cave walls, making it an experience to
remember.”
由 Fingal’s Cave 中的“The cave’s size, shape, and
naturally—arched (拱形的)roof combine with the waves to create strange sounds that
enhance its cathedral—like atmosphere.”
由 The Blue Grotto 中的“This cave is unique for its
brilliant blue light which comes from two sources: the entrance to the cave and a bigger
hole beneath the entrance.”
